The final qualifying session of the day started off with half the circuit covered in grey clouds and the other showing lovely blue sky but luckly all parts fully dry. After appearing to struggle in drenched Valencia, the dry version was more kind to Luca Marini, the recent grand prix winner setting camp at the top of the timesheets for much of the session. The young Italian allowed Marcel Schrotter a brief stint at the front in the final ten minutes but swiftly found his way back into a second career pole position.
Xavi Vierge had the most realistic chance of challenging the SKY rider but came three hundredths of a second short, with Schrotter completing the front row of the grid. Pecco Bagnaia made a step on his final lap and jumped from row three to the top of the second row, ahead of flatmate Lorenzo Baldassarri and an improving Sam Lowes.
Joan Mir got relegated to row three in the final moments fo the session and will start in the company of Augusto Fernandez and Fabio Quartararo. Miguel Oliveira rounded out the top ten and will show the way to teammate Brad Binder and Jesko Raffin on row four. Amongst the more underwhelming performances came Mattia Pasini’s 14th position, Alex Marquez starting 16th and Iker Lecuona 21st after an excellent showing in wet conditions.
