2018 Sepang Moto2 QP Result: A Furious Fight....For Second

Alex Marquez continued his weekend of dominance in spectacular fashion by shattering the lap record to secure pole position for Sunday's Moto2 race at the Sepang circuit. Marquez's 2'05.629 was nearly a second faster than Thomas Luthi's previous lap record of 2'06.383 (2015). More importantly, it was nearly half a second clear of second-place qualifier Luca Marini. Fabio Quartararo, who led the session early on, took the third slot on the grid.

Worrisome to Marquez's competition is that the Spaniard, who is the younger brother of the current MotoGP world champion Marc, was fastest in every session regardless of the track condition. Remy Gardner parlayed a strong weekend into the lead position on the second row followed by Mattia Pasini.

Pasini who was the runner-up in FP1 and FP3, qualified fifth less than a tenth in front sixth position's Franceso Bagnaia. With the final slot in the second row, Bagnaia, the championship points leader, qualified in just front of his primarly rival, Miguel Oliveira (7th) who leads the second row. Oliveira currently sits 36 points behind Bagnaia who can clinch the title this weekend with a top-five finish.

Xavi Vierge, one second off Marquez's lap record settled into eighth, a tenth in front of Brad Binder (9th).  Marcel Schrotter rounded out the top 10.

Well done Alex Marquez, Luca Marino & Fabio Quarteraro.

Great qualifying result for Remy Gardner. Not quite pole like, dare I say it, Silverstone but a brilliant bit of riding. Hope the race goes better for Remy than P.I. last Sunday.
