2018 San Juan Villicum World Supersport Superpole Result: Constant Changes At The Top

World Supersport's Superpole started with the first session where thirteen riders would fight for two promotional spots, with Hannes Soomer and Hector Barberas the quickest of the slower riders in timed qualifying.

Hector Barbera opened the session quickest, but was knocked off the top spot by Hannes Soomer, but Loris Cresson and Christian Stange were on quick lapses the quicker riders pitted in. Stange sat behind Cresson down the fast kilometre-long back straight and used the extra speed to take the top spot before the mid-session break.

Christian Stange stayed out on track while the other riders changed tyres, but Loris Cresson didn't, and on his fresh tyre, he set a 1'45.097. Hector Barbera went quicker, as did Hannes Soomer a few seconds later, with a 1'44.615.

As the flag came out, it looked like nobody was on the sort of time to challenge the top two guys, but as the lap went on, Ayrton Badovini and Loris Cresson found a bit extra and Badovini pushed Barbera from the second spot only to be knocked out himself by Loris Cresson.

Hannes Soomer and Loris Cresson advanced to Superpole two, joining the ten quickest riders, and eleven of them set out fairly quickly as Lucas Mahias waited patiently before joining the rest of the field.

Corentin Perolari was quickest after one lap, with a 1'44.141. A lap later, though, Jules Cluzel set a 1'43.995 only to be deposed by Lucas Mahias's late 1'43.657, his first lap as most of the remaining riders were pitting in. Sandro Cortese slipped a second-quickest lap in instead of pitting in, and just kept going. A couple of laps later, he took the top spot with a 1'43.585, the tactic of staying out instead of changing tyres finally working for someone.

Lucas Mahias, with fresh tyres, snatched top spot back only to have Sandro Cortese take it back again. Federico Caricasulo then knocked Cortese off the top only to be deposed a few seconds later by Lucas Mahias. Thomas Gradinger was on pace for a surprising pole position, only to meet traffic and not pass the rider in front quickly enough to maintain his blistering pace.

As the flag came out, Caricasulo and Mahias were both on pace to increase their best times, and as Caricasulo moved the goalposts once more, Lucas Mahias took three tenths of a second off his teammate and set the pole position lap record of an astounding 1'43.026.

Mahias and Caricasulo were joined by Sandro Cortese on the front row, with Jules CLuzel, Thomas Gradinger and Randy Krummenacher making up the second row.
