2018 Aragon MotoGP FP1 Result: Ducatis As Far As The Eye Can See

While the crowds were enjoying a late summer holiday in a hot Aragon, the premier class were hot on the pace as soon as they were unleashed from pitlane. And none more so than local boy Marc Marquez, who aimed to make his mark in the corner recently named after him. The Spaniard picked up the lead of the session straight away and ran a consistent pace on medium tyres while his rivals were still finding their feet.

Ducati’s warm up was a bit slower, outside the top ten after the first run on new rubber but Andrea Dovizioso attacked halfway through the session and got the better of Marquez by one thousandth of a second. To add to the early excitement, Maverick Viñales added a Yamaha to the top two by posting the exact same time as the leader but new rubber for Dovizioso soon moved the goalposts once more by three quarters of a second.

With few orange coloured sectors left on the timesheets for the final few minutes of FP1, Danilo Petrucci was the only rider to come close to his leading factory colleague by two tenths of a second. Teammate Jack Miller also put new tyres to good use to climb into third position, while Jorge Lorenzo made it four out of four for Ducati, although seven tenths down on Dovizioso. Viñales had to make do with fifth, one thousandth of a second ahead of Marquez, who did his usual FP1 routine on used rubber.

The Yamahas of Valentino Rossi and Johann Zarco were the final machines to finish within a second of the leader, with Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Iannone completing the top ten.
