The last European outing before the final showdown started off under lovely sunshine and the fastest men of the lightweight class came to the fore straight away. Despite having to give up on any championship aspirations last time out, Enea Bastianini was right back on the pace to lead the early part of the session but Jakub Kornfeil took charge of proceedings in the final five minutes. The Czech rider was on course to seal the deal with an even faster lap when he ran wide and hit the tyre wall at an uncomfortable angle. The curse of the final minute of the session also struck Gabriel Rodrigo, who went down at turn 13 while running a hot pace in second position. Both riders maintained their place on the timesheets but prime position came with a trip to the medical centre for Kornfeil.
Marco Bezzecchi in third position was over half a second slower than his leading teammate, with Philipp Oettl close behind in fourth spot. Jorge Martin had a fast start but lost a tiny bit of steam as he dropped down to fifth, while Kazuki Masaki and Vicente Perez were the last men to finish within a second of top position.
Bastianini ended the session exactly on second down on the leader, with Nicolo Bulega and Albert Arenas rounding out the top ten. Rumoured to be suffering from an arm injury from his eventful outing in Misano, Aron Canet had a rather anonymous session finished in 17th place, one spot ahead of most recent victor Lorenzo Dalla Porta.
