2018 Misano Moto2 Qualifying Result: Take Two

The good weather in Misano prompted the intermediate class to regress to their usual habits, which meant settling pole barely ten minutes into the session. Once the frantic rush was done and dusted, the snooze button was hit until the final couple of minutes of qualifying.

Home hero Pecco Bagnaia did not linger much and the championship leader set camp in provisional pole on lap six, holding station to the checkered flag and securing pole position by two tenths of a second. Marcel Schrotter looked like a strong challenger to the Tissot watch and managed to dig a couple of hundredths into that gap but ran out of rubber before sealing the deal and settled for second on the grid. Mattia Pasini was one of the few late improvers, the Italian completing the front row at his home GP, three tenths off pole.

Fabio Quartararo got ever faster as the weekend went by and the Speed Up rider qualified fourth, within half a second of pole. Brad Binder had to rely on one final lap to jump on row two, with fifth as his equal best qualifying of the season, one hundredth of a second faster than Jorge Navarro. This demoted Luca Marini to row three at the very last moment, the young Italian in a premium line-up with Alex Marquez and Miguel Oliveira. The Portuguese rider could not progress further after a light tumble at turn four, halfway through the session.

Joan Mir rounded out the top ten, half a second off pole and joined by his future replacement in the Marc VDS garage, Xavi Vierge. Augusto Fernandez continued his progress in a strong weekend with a fourth row start, ahead of the likes of Lorenzo Baldassarri in 13th – the Italian taking two tumbles within the space of 10 minutes – and Sam Lowes, the Brit quite anonymous in 15th, but with the top 20 riders within a second of pole.
