The lightweight class escaped the dreaded rain forecasted for the afternoon and managed to have a quiet session where several challengers took on the task of dethroning Jorge Martin from top spot in practice. The likes of Marco Bezzecchi and Enea Bastianini gave it a good go on home soil but ultimately had to surrender the lead to the Spaniard as the session drew to a close.
Bezzecchi tried his best and that best was nine hundredths of a second slower than Martin’s, condemning him to second for the day, a tenth ahead of Enea Bastianini, who worked wonders after a lacklustre morning session. Gabriel Rodrigo was thereabouts in fourth, the RBA rider being the final one to finish FP2 within half a second of Martin.
Aron Canet completed the top five, only narrowly ahead of Philipp Oettl and early leader Lorenzo Dalla Porta. Wildcard Kevin Zannoni impressed once again by finishing in eighth position, under a second from the leader and ahead of Toni Arbolino and Dennis Foggia, who rounded out the top ten.
FP1 leader Jakub Kornfeil had to settle for 11th best the second time around, marginally faster than the likes of Nicolo Bulega and Fabio Di Giannantonio. But the unluckiest man of the day was Jaume Masia, the young Spaniard suffering more bike niggles – his fourth issue of the day – barely three laps into the session and seeing almost no track time for the rest of proceedings.
