The sun was a welcome sight after the aquatic adventures of a fortnight ago – if only for the morning sessions – and the lightweight class were quick to resume battle. With two more weeks to recuperate from his wrist injury, Jorge Martin was up to challenge for the lead of the session straight away but his early lead eventually fell victim to Jakub Kornfeil’s advances on the very last lap. The Czech rider shot into the lead at the flag by over two tenths of a second once the track got a dusting.
Philipp Oettl was second best, while Aron Canet completed the top three another tenth of a second down. Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi was almost half a second down on his teammate from fourth position, followed closely by Gabriel Rodrigo, who overcame an early tumble on the dirty track to climb into fifth.
Albert Arenas was another familiar sight in sixth spot, ahead of Tony Arbolino and title contender Martin. Lorenzo Dalla Porta and Jaume Masia completed the top ten, the Spaniard doing especially well after retreating to the pits with technical issues twice throughout the session and eventually being the last man within a second of the leader.
Wildcard Kevin Zannoni had a short stint in the lead on the TM chassis but was then demoted to 15th after tumbling out into turn one following his hot lap. The Italian still finished the morning ahead of Nicolo Bulega in 17th and Enea Bastianini in 19th.
