2018 Brno Moto3 FP1 Result: Opportunistic Oettl

After a short summer holiday, the lightweight class swept away the cobwebs in the picturesque hills of Brno. Jorge Martin looked to be starting off his second half of the season on the right foot by jumping to the top of the timesheets late in the session with the first 2:09 time of the day. Nothing too impressive given the conditions but the world championship leader was consistently in the top three positions of the morning. His best time seemed untroubled at the top but Martin ended his session with a highside at turn ten and walked away worryingly holding his wrist. That allowed Philipp Oettl to sneak ahead in the three remaining minutes of FP1 by three tenths of a second.

With Martin keeping second while on his way to Clinica Mobile, John McPhee followed through on his podium last time around with a third position in FP1, closely trailing Martin and only two hundredths of a second ahead of Aron Canet. This trio of riders was the only one to get within half a second of the leader, with Jakub Kornfeil and Nicolo Bulega also dropping into the 2:09s but seen tenths slower than Oettl.

Kaito Toba scored another respectable finish in seventh spot, only two hundredths of a second keeping him ahead of Lorenzo Dalla Porta. Compatriots Andrea Migno and Marco Bezzecchi completed the top ten a full second down on the leader, with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Enea Bastianini missing out on top ten honours.
