2018 Sachsenring Moto3 FP3 Result: Dalla Porta Deals A Blow

The sun from Friday hid behind a few clouds on Saturday morning and the lightweight class took its time to improve on FP1 times, nevermind FP2, despite six sessions of implicit track cleaning. After the first run of subdued laptimes, Aron Canet showed the way by a modest advantage ahead of Lorenzo Dalla Porta. Despite significant improvements predictably expected, the duo would eventually prove to be the main characters of the morning.

Playtime only really started in the final seven minutes of the session, when Enea Bastianini made the first significant move to post the fastest time of the weekend, half a second ahead of the pack. That gap was swiftly surrendered to a flurry of red sectors, Dalla Porta making his presence felt once again by going faster than the pole position record at the track. The Italian held a small margin over Canet’s second position – only eight hundredths of a second – but this was sufficient to hold station to the final flag.

Marco Bezzecchi left it late to join the top thee but over three tenths of a second behind the leading duo, while Bastianini dropped back to fourth. John McPhee continued a consistent weekend with a top five although he might not enjoy the eight-tenth gap to the leader. The CIP rider snuck ahead of fairly impressive wildcard Ai Ogura, who raised expectations on only his third appearance of the season with a sixth position in the session.

Compatriot Ayumu Sasaki joined him in seventh, with veteran Jorge Martin and rookie Alonso Lopez as the final men within a second of Dalla Porta’s benchmark. Jakub Kornfeil completed the top ten but less than a tenth of a second ahead of Philipp Oettl, Niccolo Antonelli, Marcos Ramirez and Nicolo Bulega. Meanwhile, Fabio Di Giannantonio endured a bit of a nightmare down in 29th position.
