2018 Sachsenring Moto2 FP3 Result: Marini Pips Rivals In Hectic Session

The final opportunity for the intermediate class to find their way around race setup went more smoothly for some than others. Once Remy Gardner placed his Tech 3 machine at the top of the timesheets early in the session, Pecco Bagnaia and Miguel Oliveira finally made their way into the top three soon after.

On the other hand, Alex Marquez took a fast tumble in turn eight only ten minutes into the session and needed some time and a quick medical check to rejoin the action. The final third of FP3 caused more gravel trap headaches for Mattia Pasini, Iker Lecuona, Lorenzo Baldassarri, Stefano Manzi and Steven Odendaal – the South African’s machine prompting a red flag after it deflated the air fence in turn seven.

That left about eight minutes on the clock for a final charge and attacks to the top position came from all over the place. Joan Mir, Sam Lowes and Marcel Schrotter seemed to be battling it out between themselves for much of the remaining time, until Luca Marini sneaked up on them and grabbed the lead on his very last flying lap. Lowes lost out by only two hundredths of a second, with Schrotter and Mir another tenth behind.

Baldassarri did not let his earlier crash impede him and he climbed into fifth, ahead of flatmate and championship leader Bagnaia. Brad Binder ended up once again as the better of the Red Bull KTMs in seventh position, while Marquez grabbed eighth – four tenths down on the leader – despite seemingly struggling with his right wrist following the early crash.

Danny Kent and Oliveira completed the top ten, with Pasini only just missing out by two thousandths of a second. Early leader Gardner failed to improve late on and dropped to 12th place, although still within half a second of Marini and with the top 20 covered by one second. This also included Romano Fenati in 13th position, Fabio Quartararo 16th and Xavi Vierge 20th.
