2018 Donington World Superbike Superpole Result: Dry At Last

The track for World Superbike superpole one was, unlike yesterday, dry. The weather threw a few surprising names into the first session, fighting for only two places for the second session that determines the first four rows of the grid.

The session opened with a cold tyre crash by Mason Law, with the bike spitting him off. The British Superbike wildcard is missing the electronics that World Superbike regulars have. After one lap, Leon Camier led with a 1'28.108, ahead of Jordi Torres, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Chaz Davies. Jordi Torres nearly took the top spot before the break, but he lost the pace in the last section.

Jordi Torres, one of the last in, was the first out after a short break, with over five minutes remaining, giving them up to three more timed laps. Torres once again was on target to take top spot from Camier, but again lost the pace in the last sector. Toprak Razgatlioglu did not suffer in the last sector and he knocked Torres down to third quickest. Razgatlioglu, a lap later, knocked Camier off the top, setting a 1'27.799. Chaz Davies took the flag with the second quickest time, recording a 1'28.060, ahead of Leon Camier and Jordi Torres. Mason Law was taken to the medical centre for a checkup.

Razgatlioglu and Davies joined yesterday's ten quickest men for Superpole two and, as usual, Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty were the first men out. Jonathan Rea opened the session with a 1'27.503, but as soon as Tom Sykes finished his lap, he'd chopped almost a quarter of a second off Rea's time with a 1'27.269. Rea knocked a tenth of a second of his second-placed lap before heading back to the pits to join his teammate Sykes to get their qualifying tyres. At the start of the tyre break, Eugene Laverty was the only other rider within half a second of Tom Sykes, with Michael van der Mark six tenths of a second off the provisional pole.

The break finished with under four minutes remaining. giving just two possible laps on the quicker tyre. Loris Baz, building on his wet weather performance, pushed up to second place only to be knocked down to third as Jonathan Rea took the provisional pole until Tom Sykes recorded a 1'26.663 just before the flag came out. Rea and Sykes didn't try to get another fast lap and nobody could match or beat the Kawasaki pair.

Tom Sykes took his forty fourth pole position, beating Troy Corser's record of forty three pole positions and wearing lycra a superhero cape as a celebration, ahead of Jonathan Rea and Loris Baz with Lorenzo Savadori leading the Yamahas of Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark on the second row. Bradley Ray was the highest-placed wildcard in tenth place, behind highest-placed Ducati, Chaz Davies in ninth.
