2018 Austin Moto2 FP2 Result: Oliveira’s Gap Shrinks

With arguably the best track conditions of the first day of practice, Miguel Oliveira managed to do something that Marc Marquez didn’t: hold on to the lead of the session until the flag dropped. The KTM rider posted an early time that gave him four tenths of a second to play with and that cushion proved to be just about enough to hold off a fast charging Sam Lowes. The British rider only had another two hundredths of a second to find but ran out of time and settled for second.

Alex Marquez had that extra time but then stumbled on a bit of traffic which cost him six hundredths of a second to the leader. The Spaniard finished third and presented as an early contender to take the fight to Oliveira. The two might have to also battle some friendly fire from their teammates, Brad Binder finishing the afternoon session in fourth position and a tenth of a second ahead of Joan Mir, who appears to be making rapid progress.

Another impressive classification for Isaac Viñales in sixth spot was followed by an increasingly consistent Iker Lecuona in the top seven, with Hector Barbera putting his experience around the Texan circuit to good use in eight position. After a technically troublesome FP1, both Mattia Pasini and Jorge Navarro had a quite bit of track time to catch up on. They did so to reasonable success in ninth and tenth position.

Narrowly missing out on a top ten place were Romano Fenati and Pecco Bagnaia, both posting the exact same time. While Fenati slashed almost two seconds off his FP1 time, Bagnaia had a more subtle improvement and did not look like challenging for top positions.
