2018 Assen World Superbike Superpole Results: Surprising Results

Superpole one had nine riders competing for two spots to qualify for Superpole two. Loris Baz and Toprak Razgatlioglu were the quickest two riders of this second group heading into this session. The track was a bit cooler than yesterday. Jake Gagne, after a bruising crash in Free Practice two yesterday, sat this session out, and his team announced on Twitter that he would be missing the Saturday race.

After one lap, Loris Baz, with a 1'36.202, and PJ Jacobsen were the quickest, and Baz headed right back to the pits after one lap, followed as well by Jacobsen. Leandro Mercado, having stayed out for a lap more than Baz, was second quickest as the remainder of the field pitted in. Baz headed out in the second half with over six and a half minutes remaining, looking to bank a handful of laps, with as many as four flying laps available to him.

Baz's first timed lap out after the break was 1'35.832, a time good enough for the top ten yesterday. Toprak Razgatlioglu, with a 1'35.569, pushed Baz down to second and Leandro Mercado joined them third quickest with the only other 1'35 lap. As Mercado worked on a lap that was quick enough to steal second from Baz, but Baz improved his own time to consolidate his second place. As the flag came out, Mercado improved but not enough to sneak into the top two.

The favourites, Baz and Razgatlioglu, both advanced to Superpole two, only with Razgatlioglu pipping Baz for the top spot. They will get to try to improve their times with the softer qualifying tyre.

Jonathan Rea, as usual, was the first rider to set a benchmark lap, with a 1'34.917, the quickest timed lap of the weekend. Michael van der Mark was a quarter of a second off Rea's time after one lap. A lap later, Rea reset the target to 1'34.761 before returning for the tea break.

Xavi Fores and and Alex Lowes sat in second and third heading into the mid-session break, ahead of Michael van der Mark. Toprak Razgatlioglu didn't head to the track until after the break, not taking another lap or two on race rubber and waiting instead for the stickier qualifying Supercorsa.

With under five minutes remaining, the quiet was ended as twelve riders headed back out to the track. After the out lap, the timing screen lit up with red as over half the riders were on pace to get 1'34 laps on the softer rubber and Alex Lowes put in a 1'34.066 to Rea's 1'34.112, and then the flag came out.

Alex Lowes got his first Superpole in World Superbike, six places ahead of his teammate.

Alex Lowes, Jonathan Rea and Xavi Fores will be the race one front row, ahead of Lorenzo Savadori, Marco Melandri and Tom Sykes. Michael van der Mark, hoping to make a mark in front of his home crowd, will head up the third row in a surprising qualifying session.
