2018 Argentina Moto2 QP: A Surprise Attack

Xavi Vierge rode the lap of the weekend in Moto2 with a closing charge that pushed him to the top of the timesheet and two-tenths clear of the field. Vierge, who crossed the line with no time remaining in Saturday's qualifying, had been running as low at 29th early in the qualifying session.

Vierge's pole at the Termans De Rio Hondo track in Argentina is the first of the 20-year-old Spaniard's career. The pole lap pushed Lorenzo Baldasarri into second on the grid. And it dropped Danny Kent into the third and final spot on the front row.

Vierge began making his move with 10 minutes left in the session as a consistent damp line emgerged. American Joe Roberts also began moving through the pack at the same time, rising into 10th fastest with seven minutes left. Vierge's charge continued reaching sixth with four minutes remaining.

With two minutes remaining lap times began to fall rapidly. Roberts jumped into fifth while Kent climbed into seventh. Vierge appeared to have hit his maximum at ninth in the standing, nearly running off the slippery track in the process. Baldasarri's 1'56.408 seemed out of reach.

But handful of riders saved their best for last. As time expired, Jorge Navarro struck first climbing to third in the standings, bumping Sam Lowes down a peg. Then Kent put himself into second on the grid with a final charge. But none of the top riders would keep their grid placement.

Vierge struck last putting in a final lap that jumped him from ninth to first and bumping a handful of riders down the order.  Roberts would end up getting pushed down to 10th, just behind Remy Gardner (9th).
