2017 Magny-Cours World Superbike Superpole Results: It's Raining In France

Tati Mercado was sixth quickest in the wet session this morning, putting him firmly at the top of the promotional prospects in Superpole one. Ayrton Badovini was unfortunately declared unfit after a crash this morning. With no wet qualifying tyres, who would skip the mid-session tea break?

Ricardo Russo set the first lap time of 2’07.606 but Ant West, renowned for his seat weather speed, immediately chopped four seconds off it with a 2’03.490. Alap later, West looked like he could go two seconds quicker but he pulled into the pits instead. Davide Giujgliano didn’t pit in though, taking the top spot off West until Mercado took a further couple of seconds off it with a 2’00.681.

As Ant West pitted out, Tati Mercado slipped under the two minute mark with a 1’59.337 and looked like he was just going to stay out the whole session without changing his tyres. Mercado knocked another four tenths off as West was on target to take second quickest off Davide Giugliano until he crashed, sliding off at turn twelve. Riccardo Russo and Ant West both missed out on getting through to Superpole two but would head the fifth row, while Tati Mercado and Davide Giugliano would compete for their places in the front four rows.

The second session opened with Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty as the first riders on track, as usual and rain was still landing on the track, ensuring that the conditions wouldn’t be getting any better this session.

Jonathan Rea crashed out on his first flying lap at turn three and he headed back to the pits as Xavi Fores, having passed Eugene Laverty, set the first fast time with a 2’00.311, but Chaz Davies on his first flying lap took provisional pole off him with a 1’59.538. Fores and Laverty knocked Tom Sykes off the second spot with their second laps but Sykes briefly went quickest on his second lap only to be knocked back down by Davies.

As the rain poured down, Marco Melandri and Lorenzo Savadori both crashed out in the worsening conditions. Eugene Laverty also crashed out, sliding the front on a lap that would have put him on the front row. As tati Mercado and Chaz Davies looked like they might be taking a tenth off here and there in the top spots, Jonathan Rea was setting his first lap over a second quicker than the top men. Rea set a 1’57.433 with his teammate Tom Sykes second quickest over a second behind him. As the flag was due to come out, the only man that looked capable of beating Rea was Rea himself, putting in a punishing pace that was two seconds quicker than Sykes. Sykes improved his time at the flag, but was still over a second and a half slower than Rea, and he was knocked into third place by Tati Mercado.

Jonathan Rea, Tati Mercado and Tom Sykes made up the front row, Mercado as the Aprilia filling in a Kawasaki sandwich, ahead of Xavi Fores, the only Ducati in the front two rows, Yamaha’s Alex Lowes and Davide Giugliano on the Red Bull Honda.
