The sun finally shining down on Motorland Aragon must have looked inviting for the premier class gang, with some race trimmings to be found. The first few minutes saw Valentino Rossi leading briefly, Alvaro Bautista sliding out after getting too comfortable with Dani Pedrosa’s rear tyre and Marc Marquez joining Cal Crutchlow in various gravel traps around the track.
Their Honda colleague was more well-behaved and Pedrosa sat at the top of the timesheets for most of the session. The Spaniard continued to improve throughout FP4, his time only bettered by a final lap on soft tyres from Maverick Viñales. The Yamaha rider looked in pretty bad nick at the start of the session but once he ditched his old used mediums he was right back at the top.
After reattaching his aero appendages Marquez rejoined the track on the hard rear tyre, recorded anoher moment for the highlights reel and was right on his teammate’s tail by the of practice. The world championship leader finished third after stalking Viñales on his final run.
Pol Espargaro continued a fantastic weekend for KTM with a fourth position on the medium tyre, also making it an all-Spanish top four in the session. Jonas Folger broke the hegemony in fifth spot, the German returning to the action after a quick hospital check post-FP3.
Jorge Lorenzo also evaluated the soft rear tyre often favoured by the Ducatis and finished the afternoon sixth, seven tenths down on the lead Yamaha. Aleix Espargaro and Karel Abraham, also on the soft combination, followed Lorenzo within three hundredths of a second.
Andrea Dovizioso seemed to prefer the medium rear for his race run, the Italian ninth fastest and a tenth behind his teammate. The top ten was completed by Cal Crutchlow, with Johann Zarco in eleventh as the final man within a second of Viñales.
Much like his teammate, Valentino Rossi also started his session on mediums but later gave the hard rear a bit of a look. The Italian did not improve his time on the second tyre and finished sixteenth, a bit over a second separating him from Viñales.
