2017 Aragon Moto2 FP1 Result: Luthi Loves Wet Aragon

An overcast Motorland Aragon welcomed the intermediate class riders, spits of rain falling here and there and leaving the tyre choice unequivocal. Wet rubber gave Miguel Oliveira some time in the spotlight, the rain becoming more consistent just as the Portuguese rider took over at the front before the mid-session lull in proceedings.

In worsening conditions, no one looked to threaten his lead until the final ten minutes, when Tom Luthi found some pace on a track that’s not necessarily his favourite. The Swiss rider was the first to drop into the 2:09s, four tenths faster than his rivals, who did not get a chance to retaliate with heavy rain returning for the final minutes.

Mattia Pasini continued to show pole (and podium) ambitions, briefly leading the session before being dethroned by Luthi, the Italian second once the flag came out, narrowly ahead of Sandro Cortese. The German was the last rider within half a second of the leader, followed by compatriot and teammate Marcel Schrotter in fourth place.

Despite his early lead, Oliveira’s KTM was pushed back to fifth, just ahead of championship leader Franco Morbidelli. The Italian finished seven tenths down on his main title rival. Pecco Bagnaia was another early leader, the SKY racer dropping down to seventh after failing to improve on his benchmark in the final run.

Xavi Vierge was not an unusual sight in eighth place, but Augusto Fernandez in ninth and wildcard Steven Odendaal in tenth were welcome sights, as was Joe Roberts in eleventh position.

While not fully recovered, Alex Marquez returned from injury and put in only one run to assess his condition and his speed. The Spaniard was initially in the top ten but dropped to fourteenth after late improvements from his rivals, still ahead of the likes of Lorenzo Baldassarri, Fabio Quartararo or Luca Marini.
