A beautiful afternoon invited the premier class to some nice long runs, the world champion keen to get right down to business in mid 1:33s on a hard front-medium rear tyre combination. Jorge Lorenzo ran him close right away on the opposite combination but in the end it was the world championship leader to blast them away in the final lap, Andrea Dovizioso ending up leading the session by a tenth of a second.
Marc Marquez settled for second, with title rival Maverick Viñales putting in an impressive nineteen laps on the hard rear and not stopping during the session, the Spaniard showing good pace and speed good enough for third.
Lorenzo looked to favour the hard rear option as well, the Ducati man down in fourth position eventually, and the last man within half a second of the leader.
Alvaro Bautista scored fifth in the session but he also managed to go down the road in the final minutes. Dani Pedrosa ended up sixth and six tenths down, closely followed by a lightly convalescent Cal Crutchlow.
The final top ten positions went to the Tech 3 duo of Johann Zarco and Jonas Folger, with Danilo Petrucci fading slightly to complete the top ten after a slow start due to a tiny tyre mix-up. Aleix Espargaro in eleventh position was the final rider within a second of Dovizioso.
