2017 Misano Moto3 Qualifying Result: Early Bird Gets The Worm

Unlike their usual sanctionable adventures, the Moto3 boys were hardly waiting around this time, a handful of riders challenging the fastest time of the weekend barely ten minutes into the session. With no clear favourite for pole presenting throughout practice, the top honour was up for grabs and several contenders started their campaign in the final twenty minutes.

Fabio di Giannantonio was the early leader after a run on the softer tyre, improving his own time slightly on the second run, starting the final dash in a prime position. And by starting I mean dawdling in the pitlane exit while everyone was waiting around for a tow from the top riders in the final four minutes.

Leaving themselves with only one flying lap to make their case, it was an unlikely turn of events that saw Enea Bastianini score a welcome pole position in his home race. Fast man Jorge Martin followed him in second, almost two tenths down on the Italian, with world championship leader Joan Mir starting Sunday’s race from the end of the first row.

Di Giannantonio got pushed back to the second row, with early leader Romano Fenati in fifth. Recent pole expert Gabriel Rodrigo looked in prime position for pole before losing the rear in the final turn and launching Livio Loi into the orbit, the Leopard rider getting up on his own but looking quite battered. The subsequent yellow flag caused some trouble for riders still on a fast lap but Rodrigo kept sixth position.

Ayumu Sasaki continued his great form from practice with a seventh place on the grid, ahead of an encouraging eighth for Niccolo Antonelli, with Bo Bendsneyder closing the third row of the grid.

Nicolo Bulega looked to have much better speed than in practice but the Italian was pushed back from second to thirteenth in the final five minutes after his best time was cancelled for enthusiastic interpretations of track limits. The Sky Racing rider could only manage to improve to tenth place on his final run.

Aron Canet took a big tumble in turn fifteen while on a hot lap, being pushed back to seventeenth position as the Spaniard was getting checked out in the medical centre. The team miraculously got it all together to give him another shot at pole in the final run, Canet ending up eleventh and sharing fourth row with the Sky VR46 duo, six tenths down on pole.

It was a hard afternoon at the office for the likes of Marcos Ramirez, John McPhee or Juanfran Guevara, all of them outside the top fifteen.
