2017 Lausitzring World Supersport Superpole Results: Yamaha Time?

World Supersport Superpole qualifying took place after the World Superbike race and before any rain.

Thomas Gradinger and Christoffer Bergman led the field into the tyre break in the first session, with Lorenzo Zanetti knocking at the promotion door, but out of the blocks after a change was Hannes Soomer with a convincing 1’42.549, joined by Alessandro Zaccone while Ant West further back was chopping chunks out of every sector.

West took the top spot briefly until Soomer recorded a 1’41.698, a lap that looked unbeatable until Soomer knocked over a tenth more off it the next lap. PJ Jacobsen knocked Ant West out of promotion.

As the flag came out, Lorenzo Zanetti took second from Jacobsen while Ant West just missed out on promotion, in spite of beating Jacobsen down to fourth.

Hannes Soomer convincingly promoted himself to Superpole two with Lorenzo Zanetti keeping him company. Ant West leads the fifth row, joined by PJ Jacobsen and Christoffer Bergman.

Kenan Sofuoglu, Lucas Mahias and Niki Tuuli sat in front row places with Mahias taking the top spot as everyone else pitted in for fresh tyres. Mahias would have a shorter second run on a fresh tyre, but the lack of qualifying tyres means this isn’t too risky a tactic in World Supersports.

As Mahias pulled in, Sofuoglu pulled out, and while Mahias sat on his bike taking a quick drink while his tyres were being changed under him, the timing screen lit up with red sectors as three or four riders were all on pace to steal the Frenchman’s spot.

Sheridan Morais was the first to beat Mahias with Niki Tuuli and Kenan Sofuoglu both pushing Mahias off the provisional front row. Morais had over four tenths of a second of comfort at the top and as riders could shrink the gap, his lap looked like it could be his first pole position in the class.

Lucas Mahias was pushed down to eighth place while his tyres were changed. On his first lap out, he climbed back to fifth place and started a new lap with only twelve seconds left.

Sheridan Morais took pole position, ahead of Federico Caricasulo and Niki Tuuli, filling the front row with Yamahas. Jules Cluzel led the second row, alongside Kenan Sofuoglu and Lucas Mahias.
