2017 Spielberg Moto2 FP3 Result: Luthi Keeps Momentum Going

Probably rejoicing that the Friday rain-washed fiasco didn’t look like repeating, the intermediate class did not waste any time in getting up to speed and challenge least year’s times. Well, Tom Luthi was at least, the Swiss rider already about half a second away from the pole time record ten minutes into the session and the first man into the 1:29s. The Swiss rider failed to improve on his early time but it was safe enough insurance of top position in FP3.

The slightly less notorious Marquez and Viñales family members were his closest challengers until Mattia Pasini jumped ahead and got within two tenths of a second of Luthi. Compatriot Pecco Bagnaia left it late to have a go at glory but only sneaked ahead of Pasini by three thousandths of a second, which left the both of them a tenth and a half down on the leader and the only other riders into the 1:29s.

Alex Marquez was demoted to fourth with a best time set mid-session and over three tenths down on Luthi. Miguel Oliveira was down in the gravel ten minutes into FP3 but caught up to finish fifth, only two hundredths of a second behind Marquez.

Isaac Viñales continued his good form with a sixth place in morning practice, less than four tenths down on the leader and seven hundredths of a second ahead of the world championship leader. Franco Morbidelli doesn’t seem to have it all his own way this weekend, the Italian seventh and nearly half a second slower than the Brno victor.

The top ten was completed by Luca Marini, Fabio Quartararo and Dominique Aegerter, all within seven tenths of Luthi. It was another average session for Takaaki Nakagami, who was eight tenths down, in sixteenth position.
