2017 Laguna Seca World Superbike Superpole Results: Shorter Lap Tactics?

Laguna Seca is a shorter track than most on the calendar, giving riders the opportunity to get an extra lap or two per Superpole session.

Lorenzo Savadori opened the session with a 1’24.145, ahead of Leandro Mercado before everyone headed in for the mid-session tyre change. Michael van der Mark, never having missed qualifying for the second session, was third quickest before the second half.

Michael van der Mark sneaked up to second place but was knocked back out of contention when Leandro Mercado went quickest. Lorenzo Savadori took over at the top, ahead of Mercado, with a 1’23.737 after the flag came out.

Lorenzo Savadori and Leandro Mercado qualified for the second session while Michael van der Mark and Raffaele De Rosa were the quickest men to miss the top spots.

After a bit of a delay, the twelve riders qualified for Superpole two headed out with Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty leading the parade. Rea set a 1’23.179 as the benchmark lap, the fastest lap of the weekend so far with Chaz Davies second quickest. A lap later, Rea went even quicker, setting a 1’23.114, and was joined by Chaz Davies and Tom Sykes, both within four tenths, before it was time for tea and the qualifying tyres.

When the qualifying tyres were fitted, Leon Camier headed out first, buying himself possibly an extra lap and putting himself into fifth place. Eugene Laverty jumped up to second place, before any of the faster men recorded a lap on the sticky tyre, but once Tom Sykes completed his lap, everyone went down a place as Sykes set a 1’22.476 with enough time to fit another fast lap in. Rea joined Sykes in the 1’22s and was on pace to take pole until he hit the third sector and tangled with the corkscrew, relinquishing top spot to his teammate.

Tom Sykes, Jonathan Rea and Chaz Davies will make up the front row for the race later today, while Marco Melandri, Eugene Laverty and Leandro Mercado round out the second.

Wildcard Jake Gagne will start his home race in eighteenth place.
