2017 Sachsenring Moto3 FP1 Result: Another Headline About Martin

With a new asphalt to test, all eyes were to the sky as the lightweight class opened proceedings in Germany. The rain avoided them for the entire length of the session, although the improved surface didn’t really see them set rocket pace from the off, the track waiting for some rubber to build up.

Jorge Martin was characteristically in charge of affairs, the expert qualifier being the first man into the 1:27s. Bo Bendsneyder proved to be more motivated than discouraged by his unlucky home race adventures last weekend, the Dutchman continuing his good form with a second position only a tenth of a second off Martin.

Nicolo Bulega put in a late lap to hop into third position, the Sky VR46 rider only a further four hundredths of a second behind the top duo. Philipp Oettl looked to be having fun on home soil, the German finishing the session fourth, in front of championship leader Joan Mir.

While not entirely comfortable with his bike in the debut of the session, Marcos Ramirez kept impressing with a sixth position. As former poleman at the venue, Enea Bastianini had a better start to his weekend to be in the top seven.

Livio Loi was a welcome sight in eighth position, the top ten completed by Assen winner Aron Canet and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Romano Fenati’s curious choice of cap before the session proved to be unlucky, the Italian down in twelfth spot, almost a second down on the leader.
