2017 Sachsenring Moto2 FP2 Result: Luthi Fends Off Schrotter

Following the rain dance of MotoGP, the intermediate class was left with a drying line on a damp track. After a few exploratory laps on wet tyres, most riders chose to sit it out until the sunshine did its job in preparing the track for a proper race run.

The only real action started in the final twenty minutes, Tom Luthi one of the first riders to lead on slick tires. Pecco Bagnaia followed his lead (quite literally, chasing the Swiss rider on track), the two exchanging top position several times as riders were pouring out of the pits to make the most of a rapidly improving track.

Franco Morbidelli was quick to catch up with the leaders, which wasn’t particularly difficult with the track improving lap after lap, a remote battle ensuing between the trio. Luthi put a stop to that in the final few minutes, going three tenths of a second faster than his rivals to decisively top the afternoon session.

The hierarchy looked set with Morbidelli and Bagnaia behind, before Marcel Schrotter put a smile on the faces of local spectators by sneaking ahead to snatch second position, only four hundredths of a second behind Luthi. That dropped the Italian duo of Morbidelli and Bagnaia into third and fourth spot.

Takaaki Nakagami put in a good final lap to climb into fifth position, followed by an encouraging result from Sandro Cortese after a season of struggles and crashes. FP1 leader Miguel Oliveira finished seventh and was the final rider within half a second of the leader.

Alex Marquez was eighth, with Dominique Aegerter and Hafizh Syahrin once again completing the top ten. After a miracle repair job following this morning’s adventures, Mattia Pasini had a bike to go out with and score a fourteenth position.
