Things were slowly heating up despite the clouds in Assen, but the action in the intermediate class did not see many surprises. Tom Luthi grabbed the lead early in the session and never let it go, his reign at the top of the timesheets as big as three tenths of a second.
Takaaki Nakagami chipped away at that gap late in the session to go second. Miguel Oliveira had a better start to his weekend in the Netherlands, the Portuguese rider finishing third in the session. The last man within three tenths of a second off Luthi was Marcel Schrotter, the Dynavolt rider taking fourth spot from championship leader Franco Morbidelli on the final lap.
Morbidelli had to settle for fifth, almost half a second down on the leader and two tenths ahead of Lorenzo Baldassarri in sixth position. Axel Pons was seventh, only two thousandths of a second behind the Italian.
Alex Marquez started the morning session with a spill in turn sixteen, while on a fast lap. With the bike taking quite a few tumbles, the Spaniard could only return to the track in the final ten minutes and did well to recover an eighth position by the end of FP1.
The top ten was completed by Xavier Simeon and Hafizh Syahrin, with Mattia Pasini close behind them. Pecco Bagnaia had a fast crash in turn one in the final minutes, which meant he could not improve on seventeenth spot.
