2017 Barcelona MotoGP FP2 Result: That Home Feeling For Marquez *UPDATED*

With hot weather and no sight of rain this time around, the riders were eager to go out and do their usual homework. Andrea Dovizioso didn’t take long to beat the time set in the morning by the reigning world champion, trading blows at the front with Marc Marquez himself for the next few laps, Marquez even finding time to test some overtakes in the new chicane at turns 14-15. Marquez set the fastest time of the day on his final lap with an Avintia bike parked in the middle of turn fifteen.

The Spaniard put some daylight into his pursuers, stealing top spot from Jorge Lorenzo, the Ducati rider eventually sneaking ahead of his teammate to finish second while also giving Tito Rabat a helpful lift into sixth place. Jonas Folger was the top Yamaha once again, the Tech 3 rider half a second off Marquez into third spot.

Despite leading early on, Dovizioso had to settle for fourth, ahead of fellow podium finisher in Mugello, Danilo Petrucci, with Rabat sixth and a twitchy Johann Zarco seventh.

The final shootout saw Alvaro Bautista as the first to switch to the soft rear tyre after he went down into turn fourteen, the Spaniard taking over at the top in the final five minutes. Pedrosa came three hundredths of a second short a few moments later but found some more speed the second time around. Neither result would stand at the top, the two Spaniards dropping back into eighth and ninth spots by the end of the session, with the Honda leading the Ducati.

It continued to be a challenging afternoon for the factory Yamahas, Valentino Rossi only just sneaking into the top ten on his final lap, eight tenths down on Marquez. Maverick Viñales had to give the soft front tyre a try to find his way higher than twentieth place after struggling with lack of grip early in the session. Things looked rosier for a while but the Spaniard dropped back to sixteenth by the end of afternoon practice.

Cal Crutchlow crashed on the outlap of his final run and missed his chance to improve his time, which saw him finishing down in nineteenth position.

UPDATE: Several riders were penalized with lap time cancellations after the session ended. Marc Marquez, Dani Pedrosa, Tito Rabat, Maverick Viñales and Johann Zarco were sanctioned for riding at racing speed in a section of the track under double yellow flags, specifically whilst passing a crashed motorcycle that was still on track. Even with the cancelled lap, Marquez and Viñales keep their positions, while Zarco and Pedrosa benefit from Rabat's penalty to gain a position. Rabat drops from sixth to twentieth.

I still can't believe that there was a bike parked in the middle of the turn!
And this is what they call a safer track?
Can someone explain what I'm missing here?
I don't even want to think what would have happened if the same accident had occurred during the race in the first laps with all the bikes in close fast procession...

Personally I do not think the new track lay-out spoilt the track layout compared to the existining f1 chicane. It is just a bit different. Corner entry is quite interesting. Also the little dip because of the banking, which makes rider cannot push too much... which makes it attempting to pass. The corner coming up the straight is quite interesting also because of the lower speed and so the more power applied at cornerexit.

But especially in the smaller class there is more room voor low speed accidents just after the start of the race. A crasher just after entering the corner can collect a lot of riders midcorner and even riders at corner exit. Not very good
