2017 Barcelona Moto2 FP1 Result: Oliveira Shines In The Spanish Sun

The sun finally got out of bed as the intermediate class went out on track, the surface drying but still keeping some tricky damp patches, which Luca Marini illustrated with an impressive highside early in the session. The Italian was fit after a check-up but his bike was too damaged to rejoin the action.

After an eager interpretation of track limits early in the session, Miguel Oliveira bounced back to post the fastest time of the day and top the session. Takaaki Nakagami also set off to a good start to his weekend with a second position less than two tenths behind Oliveira.

Forgetting the blip of Mugello, Franco Morbidelli got back where he enjoys most – the top of the timesheets for the first half of the session, eventually dropping back to third but only two tenths down on the leader.

The Italian was followed by his two closest rivals in the championship, with Thomas Luthi a further three tenths behind, in fourth spot. Alex Marquez had a slow start but animated home fans with a harmless Marquez-style gravel trap excursion, the Spaniard steadily climbing into fifth position soon after.

Jorge Navarro is starting to get the hang of this Moto2 affair and constantly placing well into the top ten, on this occasion sixth, in front of rain enthusiast Hafizh Syahrin and last weekend’s winner Mattia Pasini.

Lorenzo Baldassarri and Xavi Vierge completed the top ten, despite the Spaniard still getting home visits from the doctor mid-session.
