2017 Donington Park World Superbike Superpole Results: The Sun Returns

After the morning's rain, the sun came out for Superpole one. Roman Ramos and Eugene Laverty were favourites to advance to Sueprpole two, but with Xavi Fores behind them, nothing was certain.

Laverty was the first rider out, setting an opening elbow-down lap of 1'28.857, joined shortly after by Xavi Fores, a half second behind. Laverty then set a 1'28.494 lap with Stefan Bradl second quickest on the second lap. Fores stayed out for a third lap while everyone else pitted in ahead of him.

Jordi Torres was first out of the pits, elevating himself to second place on the empty track. Xavi Fores knocked Torres from second spot, with a lap that was beating Laverty's until the last sector. As the flag came out, Laverty and Fores remained unchallenged and the two progressed to the next session. Jordi Torres was the quickest of the remaining riders and will start at the head of the fifth row.

The track had completely dried for Superpole two, with twenty mile an hour winds clearing the clouds but bringing their own issues. Jonathan Rea was the first rider to set a fast lap, with a 1'27.781 with Eugene Laverty right behind him, only missing out on top spot after a wobble into the Melbourne Loop hairpin.

Tom Sykes, pole-setter here for the last two years, knocked over three tenths off Rea's time, setting a 1'27.406 on his first flying lap. Rea was unable to beat that and pitted in for the qualifying tyre only to see Sykes had already pitted in ahead of him after setting his fast lap as his only lap.

Leons Camier and Haslam were first out of the pits, but the first man to set a fast lap on the sticky tyres was Chaz Davies with a 1'27.338 but the Kawasaki pair of Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea were on fast laps. Tom Sykes was the quicker of the pair with a 1'26.641. As the flag came out, Rea was on pace to beat his teammate, but he was unable to match the pole man's pace in the latter half of the lap and he had to settle for second place, a third of a second behind his teammate.

Tom Sykes was the only rider with a 1'26 lap, his third pole position in a row at Donington, his fourth in five years. Jonathan Rea and Chaz Davies made up the front row, with Alex Lowes, Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty on the second row behind them.

Leon Haslam crashed on a fast lap and ended in eighth place behind Xavi Fores.
