As weather predictions claimed, the MotoGP class was greeted by a very wet track and tiny patches of blue sky as they left the pitlane for the second practice session of the day. Wet weather aficionados Scott Redding, Loris Baz and Jack Miller were the first to make a statement at the top of the timesheets, while the usual podium contenders were refining their rain settings and playing it safe in the tricky conditions.
As the drizzle returned in the final part of the session, that did not stop the Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso from showing off the Italian bike’s love affair with wet conditions. After both Pramac riders led for most of the session, it proved to be just the opening act for the factory Ducati of Dovizioso to take over.
Marc Marquez was the only one to stop a Ducati top three takeover, the Honda rider taking it easy in the early part of the session and built up to a second position just four hundredths of a second behind Dovizioso.
Danilo Petrucci fought his way through the puddles to lead his teammate, Redding dropping back slightly after his early lead, that placing the Pramac duo in third and fourth positions. Andrea Iannone brought the Suzuki closer to the top with a fifth place, while Alvaro Bautista was the final rider to post a time within a second of Dovizioso.
Despite leading the session momentarily, Jack Miller finished seventh, ahead of the top Yamaha, Maverick Viñales in eighth spot. Sam Lowes had a decent session in ninth place and was better placed than his teammate this time around.
Valentino Rossi had a better afternoon in fully wet conditions, the Italian keeping himself in the top five for the first half of FP2, eventually dropping back to complete the top ten.
While the rest of the Ducatis were dominating at the front, Jorge Lorenzo appeared to struggle in fifteenth place, with Dani Pedrosa also not a fan of the cold conditions, the Honda rider avoiding any risk down in twenty-first place.
