2017 Imola World Superbike Superpole Results: A Surprising Lack Of Red Flags

Jordi Torres, favourite to qualify for Superpole two, sat out the first Superpole due to a bout of gastroenteritis, leaving the Hondas of Nicky Hayden and Stefan Bradl as the two quickest men coming into this session.

Lorenzo Savadori set the benchmark with a 1’49.030 but ran off the track the lap after, leaving Nicky Hayden to take the top spot off him by a third of a second. As everyone pitted in, Stefan Bradl, missing out the first couple of minutes as his team worked on his bike, slipped up into the quickest spot setting a 1’48.460. Honda had the top two places as all eleven riders popped into the pits for the tea break.

Bradl and Hayden ran out of laps due to a yellow flag early round the lap, so they sat there as targets as several riders still had a lap in them, but Stefan Bradl’s lap was unbeatable. Lorenzo Savadori pushed Nicky Hayden out of second spot and into thirteenth place for race one.

Bradl and Savadori joined the ten quickest men in Superpole two. Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty were first out of the pits and they set quick times, only to have Leon Camier to slap down a 1’47.126 as a target lap. Chaz Davies and Tom Sykes responded with quicker laps, Davies setting a 1’46.601.

Inevitably, Davies and Sykes were split by Jonathan Rea and joined by Marco Melandri, pushing Camier to fifth. A quick tea break later and Chaz Davies was first out on the three-lap qualifying tyre and he lit up red sectors on the timing screen and lopped almost a second off his lap time. A lap later, more red sectors while riders were still getting new boots on their bikes. Leon Camier sneaked into second place as Davies pinched off another tenth of a second. His early escape from the pits paid off as time ran out and nobody seemed to have an answer to the Welshman’s Ducati.

Chaz Davies took his fifth career pole position, extracting the most from the qualifying tyre. Tom Sykes took second place just three hundredths of a second behind Davies and Jonathan Rea rounded out the front row three tenths further back. Leon Camier held off Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty to head the second row.
