2017 Jerez Moto3 FP2 Result: Mir Back On Track

Something resembling sun welcomed us back from the lunch break but still not enough to tempt all the riders out on track. With many teams waiting for the surface to dry, that left the top spot to be disputed by Jakub Kornfeil, Lorenzo Dalla Porta, Albert Arenas or Darryn Binder.

Predictably, times started tumbling as the session progressed and the conditions improved, Philipp Oettl and the Leopard Racing duo exchanging first place, Joan Mir the first lasting leader of FP2. While others have challenged his position, he recovered it once more on his final lap.

Given their familiarity with the track, as their usual testing ground, many of the top riders chose not to grace us with their on-track presence until the final ten minutes of the session, when the damp patches disappeared. Once they did, Romano Fenati reminded us who’s the most recent winner in the class by being fast right away and finishing second after missing all of FP1 and most of FP2, yet only two tenths down on the leader.

John McPhee looked prepared to challenge for top honours but had to settle for third after a crash in the final corner a few minutes before the end of the session. Although one full second down on the championship leader, Darryn Binder kept fourth place, ahead of Livio Loi. Having posted a good time early on, Tony Arbolino was another of a handful of fallers in the final minutes and dropped to sixth position.
