2017 Assen World Superbike Superpole Results: Hot Laps, Hot Tempers

Superpole one was contested by eleven riders, vying for two places to compete in Superpole two, with Randy Krummenacher and Xavi Fores in the two favourite spots. Superpole two ended in riders arguing in Parc Fermé.

Updated: See below.

Nicky Hayden’s start was frustrated by the sticker still being on his rear tyre, but he did manage to get out before Stefan Bradl whose bike remained in the garage. Ayrton Badovini recorded the first timed lap, but after everyone apart from late-starting Bradl had recorded a lap, the top two were Xavi Fores with a 1’36.519 and Hayden. Fores increased his pace a lap later but Randy Krummenacher knocked him off the top spot with a 1’35.832.

Stefan Bradl recorded his first lap, eighth quickest, while everyone else pitted in for the usual mid-session chat with their teams. Bradl joined them after one lap. With five minutes left, everyone set out to for their last couple of fast laps and jostling for position and a tow was paramount. Xavi Fores had to wave riders past who knew he’d be a good windbreak and the slower riders focussed on Randy Krummenacher instead.

Most riders wasted their first laps trying to get a tow, but Fores and Hayden didn’t waste their laps and on their second quick laps, the pair went quickest, Fores setting a 1’35.562. Nicky Hayden got his first flying lap cancelled for exceeding the track limits, but it didn’t affect his faster lap and he joined Xavi Fores in Superpole two.

Randy Krummenacher’s tactical decision to thwart his followers for a lap didn’t pay off and he would be at the top of the pile of non-qualifiers.

Superpole two looked like the front row would be Jonathan Rea, Tom Sykes and Chaz Davies in an unknown order before it started, but the crowds were hoping Michael van der Mark would put in a good result in front of his home crowd.

There was also the matter of a lap record that has stood since Loris Baz set it in 2014.

Jonathan Rea’s first fast lap was a 1’34.596, a couple of tenths off Baz’s record and Tom Sykes then sliced three tenths of a second off it on his first complete lap, being much quicker than Rea in the last sector. Marco Melandri was third quickest ahead of Eugene Laverty and Chaz Davies before everyone slipped into their boxes for the new multi-lap qualifying tyre.

Leon Camier was first out after the mid-session tea break and set a lap as everyone else headed out for what looked like it would be two final qualifying laps. Jonathan Rea’s first flying lap started off a third of a second under Tom Sykes’s time, and then half a second quicker by the second sector and eight tenths after three sectors while Sykes was only a couple of tenths slower at the same points. Sykes didn’t make as much of a good pace in the last sector as he usually did and that cost him the chance to depose his teammate.

As Jonathan Rea completed his blisteringly hot lap, he cruised round to return to pitlane and was on a slow lap when Chaz Davies came up behind him. Sykes was off the racing line and heard a bike coming up and looked over his left shoulder only to see nobody there because Davies was on front-row pace and was passing on the right. Rea only noticed Davies when the Welshman slapped him on the arm to admonish him for holding up his lap. Davies gesticulated at Rea, obviously slightly miffed by his behaviour. A disagreement broke out and the pair continued the argument in Parc Fermé, with Davies telling Rea “You’d already f**ked me” about his track position. Davies looked for an apology and Rea eventually capitulated. The crux appeared to be that Davies thought Rea deliberately slowed him down while Rea thought he was clearly off the fast line.

Jonathan Rea obliterated Loris Baz’s lap record with a 1’33.505 ahead of Tom Sykes two tenths behind him. Chaz Davies was almost a second off pole position in third place.

The second row is made of Lorenzo Savadori, Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty.

The results were under a cloud as they were under investigation for a while, as a result of the incident between Davies and Rea. This report will be updated if the results are changed.

Update: Race direction have penalised Jonathan Rea three places and have promoted Lorenzo Savadori to the front row, behind Tom Sykes in pole and Chaz Davies. Jonathan Rea will start in fourth place.
