In Superpole one, eleven riders competed on regular race tyres for two spots in the second session. The weather was a little colder due to the early start. Stefan Bradl and Nicky Hayden were the two favourites, qualifying yesterday in eleventh and twelfth places.
The first flying laps completed, Stefan Bradl set the fastest lap with a 1’51.348 and a lap later he increased his pace with Nicky Hayden joining him in second place, both Honda riders setting their fastest laps of the weekend before everyone pitted in for the mid-session tyre change.
Leon Camier, having pitted after only one fast lap, was the first out on fresh tyres but he couldn’t increase his standing from fourth place behind Markus Reiterberger. Reiterberger crashed at turn three, followed by Randy Krummenacher and Ondrej Jesek at turn two. Roman Ramos finally set a complete lap, then another one that deposed Camier from fourth.
Nicky Hayden swapped places with his teammate Stefan Bradl, taking first place off him, with a 1’50.945 and as the flag came out, nobody was able to catch the top two. Markus Reiterberger’s early lap was fast enough for him to qualify in thirteenth place of the grid, joined by Roman Ramos and Leon Camier on the fifth row of the grid.
Superpole two was the first outing of the new long-life qualifying tyres, replacing the one-shot tyres with rubber that could do two or three fast laps.
In the second session, Jonathan Rea was, as usual, the first to get out on track and he set a 1’50.191 with his teammate Tom Sykes second quickest. Alex Lowes pulled in before setting a lap time, parking the bike against a fence with his engine smoking.
After setting one fast lap, with an oil flag showing at turn fifteen, almost everyone remaining pitted in for the new Q tyre, with Chaz Davies staying out for an additional lap that put him in third place before the last outing.
Xavi Fores used the new tyre to get second-quickest but Jonathan Rea increased his lead with a 1’49.350 and Tom Sykes under two tenths behind. Chaz Davies then knocked the pair down a spot, taking top place with a 1’49.319.
Stefan Bradl’s Honda caught fire, causing him to potentially lose two laps of qualifying and he ended in eleventh place ahead of Alex Lowes.
The chequered flag came out but nobody was on the sort of lap that could trouble the front rows and Davies took pole position ahead of the Kawasaki of Rea and Sykes, with Marco Melandri heading Xavi Fores and Jordi Torres on row two.
