The Marc VDS Moto2 riders dominated the second day of testing, Franco Morbidelli and Alex Marquez taking turns at the top of the timesheets. Morbidelli ended up with top honors, setting a fast time in the cool of the morning, when the track offers the most grip. Taka Nakagami ended the day in third, four tenths behind fastest man Morbidelli, while Fabio Quartararo impressed on his switch to Moto2.
Times were exceptionally tight behind the Marc VDS riders. From Quartararo in fourth to Axel Pons in tenth, there was a quarter of a second, each rider separated by just a few hundredths of a second. Though the timesheets were dominated by the Kalexes, both KTM and Suter made a good showing.
The biggest difference was in the way the bikes handled the heat. While the Kalexes worked reasonably well in both conditions, the Suters were more adapted to the cold, and the KTM's better in the afternoon. Danny Kent spoke of being much happier with the Suter chassis, and praised its rear grip, though when track temperatures rise the grip at the front drops off and the extra rear grip of the Suter starts to push the front. Miguel Oliveira, on the other hand, was much more competitive in the afternoon, rather than the morning.
One possible explanation for the domination of the Marc VDS team is that they were given some new forks to try from Ohlins. With the Kalex chassis being stiffer this year, Ohlins are turning to material from a few seasons ago, which works better with the current stiffer chassis. Marquez and Morbidelli tested the new Ohlins forks on Thursday, while Luca Marini is set to try them on Friday. If the riders approve of the new forks, they will be available to the Moto2 teams running Ohlins from the Jerez race.

Which engines are they using in Jerez?
Thanks for the updates David, if I'm not going crazy, I understand this test allows use of Supersport and other spec motors as they don't receive their sealed engines until later?
Has this had any effect on who is running where and on what motor?
Thanks as always...
Expect some strong showing
Expect some strong showing from Quartararo and Oliviera. They've got heaps of talent and can definitely push for the top 6 places. It is good to see Moto2 is getting better by the day.
Moto 2 Rookie
Very impressive performance by young Fabio. It's a big step graduating from Moto 3 to Moto 2, much more weight, much more power. A future star?
