2017 Sepang MotoGP Test Tuesday 15:00 Times - Slow Start As Winglets Reappear

After four hours of inaction, as the riders waited for the track to dry, riders started to head out shortly after 2pm, to get some time in on a usable track. Times are still slow, as the track is still damp in patches, but the teams are now all pounding out the laps.

Marc Marquez is currently quickest, leading Alvaro Bautista and Valentino Rossi, but the times are not really representative just yet. Times are likely to drop as riders disperse the moisture remaining on the track surface.

The big news this afternoon came at Yamaha. The Japanese manufacturer was the first to break cover with their solution to the winglet ban, using a double-walled fairing to control flow over a series of vanes and create downforce. Images had been floating around the internet, but they looked photoshopped. Italian photographer Mirco Lazzari caught Yamaha test rider Kouta Nozane with the winglets attached to an M1 test bike, as explained by GPOne.com.

Then, this afternoon, Valentino Rossi took the bike out for a test with the winglets, diving out of a closed garage, then immediately back into hiding. Eagle-eyed MCN reporter Simon Patterson happened to be standing in the right place to capture it. No doubt there will be more developments along these lines.

Good thing the winglets were banned, this solution looks a lot cheaper and way less complicated. Who'd have thought!

Sarcasm aside, I am looking forward to the aero wars. Bring it on.

Exactly what I suggested would replace winglets last year when the ban was looming - it just makes sense.
