2016 Valencia Moto3 Qualifying Result: There’s A First Time For Everything

The afternoon sun wasn’t very welcoming to the Moto3 class, Juanfran Guevara opening the qualifying session with an impressive rodeo ride, while Andrea Migno was more unlucky, losing control in turn nine and looking in a fair bit of pain. They both rejoined with different levels of success.

After the first benchmarks were set, Enea Bastianini claimed provisional pole but first Joan Mir and then Philipp Oettl narrowly got ahead after the second run, the order settling until the final three minutes, when the usual Moto3 rush hour hit.

World champion Brad Binder was the first big mover, taking over at the top on his penultimate lap, but it proved not to be enough to cope with the rapid charge of Aron Canet, the rookie putting his Estrella Galicia bike on top of the pile with a surprising first pole position of the youngster’s short career. With Binder second, the front row will be completed by Hiroki Ono.

The second row is opened by Nicolo Bulega, another rookie showing good signs of progress throughout the weekend. After his adventures at the start of the session, Guevara recovered enough for a reasonable fifth position, ahead of Niccolo Antonelli. Provisional pole man Oettl dropped back to seventh position, followed by Bo Bendsneyder and Enea Bastianini getting stuck with a rather disappointing third row start in ninth.

Familiar wildcard Karel Hanika made an appearance in thirteenth spot, ahead of the likes of Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Navarro, both outside of the top fifteen and less than a tenth faster than Maria Herrera’s replacement, Raul Fernandez.
