2016 Jerez World Supersport Superpole Results: Another Lap Record Buried

Gino Rea was declared unfit after his crash in yesterday's second session, hitting another rider's discarded bike, and Lorenzo Zanetti inexplicably switched to Rea's bike from the factory MV. Twenty two riders contested the opening session, chasing the two spots in the second session.

Ayrton Badovini set the benchmark lap of 1'44.434 ahead of Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Jules Cluzel. Badovini then nipped into the pits to avoid the rush as everyone else tried another lap. Lorenzo Zanetti had mechanical issues on Gino Rea's bike after setting the fourth quickest lap and he limped back to the pits.

Nacho Calero hit traffic that stopped him from taking the top spot from Badovini, but he still managed the second fastest time until Kyle Ryde knocked him down to third. After the flag came out, Khairuddin took the top spot briefly until Jules Cluzel put in a 1'44.301 to grab the top spot from him. Cluzel and Khairuddin were not beaten and both got promoted to the second Superpole session.

Eleven riders contested the second session with Gino Rea having qualified in tenth place but not taking part.

After one lap, Kenan Sofuoglu with a 1'43.763 led Jules Cluzel with Randy Krummenacher needing another lap to get into the top three. As everyone issued in, Sofuoglu stayed out a lap more and set a 1'43.331, nine hundred and ninety eight thousandths of a second quicker than Cluzel's fast lap. After the mid-session lull, Krummenacher put in a fast lap within five hundredths of Sofuoglu's lap and a lap later, he went two tenths quicker than Sofuoglu and sat in the top spot.

Kenan Sofuoglu, however, had one lap left in him. and got one in after the flag came out. Sofuoglu beat Randy Krummenacher's lap by over a third of a second and over a second clear of Jules Cluzel in third place. Sofuoglu's pole position lap put paid to Sam Lowes's lap record from 2013 and his 1'42.969 was his thirtieth career pole position and his seventh of 2016. On this form, he will likely take his fifth title tomorrow and he stated that he will be going for the title victory tomorrow, not necessarily the race, and with a forty two point lead over Randy Krummenacher, that shouldn't be too much work for the reigning champion.
