2020 Europe Moto3 FP3 Result: McPhee Tops Wet Session

Overnight rain left the Ricardo Tormo Circuit well drenched ahead of the third set of practice sessions and the lightweight class stood no chance of challenging the combined top 14 hierarchy ahead of qualifying. In the wet conditions, Niccolo Antonelli spent most time at the top of the timesheets but in the end it was John McPhee to stole the headlines by two tenths of a second. Celestino Vietti might have finished second but the Italian remained the fastest overall over the three practice sessions. Ai Ogura might be nowhere near Q2 places but the title contender finished third in FP3, after leading briefly, and might have the benefit of an extra 15 minutes of dry running in Q1.

Andrea Migno continued his solid run in tricky conditions with fourth position from compatriots Antonelli and Riccardo Rossi. Albert Arenas might have climbed up to seventh position but the championship leader will still get an outing in Q1 later on. Carlos Tatay, Tatsuki Suzuki and Raul Fernandez rounded out the top ten positions, with the likes of Tony Arbolino 11th, Jaume Masia 14th and Gabriel Rodrigo sitting out the session completely.

2020 Europa Moto2 FP2 Result: Bastianini Robs Lowes

The intermediate class closed a gloomy day in Valencia and benefitted from a mostly dry track surface. Championship leader Sam Lowes looked like the strongest man in the dry, the British rider starting off with a one second advantage at the top of the timesheets, however, a late tumble at turn 8 made him miss out on the final eight minutes of the session and title rival Enea Bastianini took full advantage. The Italian stole the headline by half a tenth of a second from Lowes, with Joe Roberts in third, one tenth off top spot.

Lorenzo Baldassarri made some solid progress to climb into fourth spot, ahead of compatriot Fabio Di Giannantonio, very closely followed by Remy Gardner and Jorge Martin. Simone Corsi continued to show good pace in eighth position, with Hector Garzo a persistent presence inside the top ten as well. Marco Bezzecchi rounded out the top ten positions as the final rider to post a time within half a second of the leader. FP1 headliner Tom Luthi dropped to 11th place, while the final positions in the combined top 14 went to Xavi Vierge, Nicolo Bulega and Marcel Schrotter.

Luca Marini found some confidence in the improved conditions to climb into 15th, only six tenths off top spot and hoping to improve that further on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, Jake Dixon joined the action after skipping FP1 but an early crash at turn 4 saw him pay a visit to the medical centre with a suspected wrist injury.

2020 Europe MotoGP FP2 Result: More Miller Time

While the Valencian sky was still grey and overcast, the asphalt was dry enough for slick tyres straight out the gate, although the dry line was narrow to begin with. Regardless of the improved conditions, Jack Miller remained the fastest man on track, although the lead changed hands all throughout FP2 and it all came down to the final flying laps. Aleix Espargaro put together a fine final lap to come within a tenth of a second of the lead and nearly two tenths faster than Franco Morbidelli, who enjoyed a late off road adventure.

Takaaki Nakagami added a Honda to the mix in fourth position, three tenths off the lead and narrowly ahead of Pol Espargaro. The KTM man was the provisional leader during the time attack but got pushed back to fifth in the closing stages, as the last rider within half a second of the leader. Alex Rins was the lead Suzuki rider in sixth, with Brad Binder making a late jump into seventh position. Andrea Dovizioso briefly saw his name in the top three but dropped to eighth late on, while title rival Fabio Quartararo steadily fought his way into the top ten.

Joan Mir looked like he was out of the combined top ten when the checkered flag waved but a late yellow flag infringement for Cal Crutchlow allowed the world championship leader back into the top ten. With news breaking of Maverick Vinales’ pitlane start for using an extra engine, the Spaniard won’t be too bothered by 11th position on the combined standings, eight tenths off the leader.

Notable mentions go to Danilo Petrucci, who looked fast throughout the session but a late crash at turn 14 dropped him to 18th, and Garrett Gerloff who was as high as 5th on his first (and possibly only) day on Valentino Rossi’s machine.

2020 Europe Moto3 FP2 Result: Vietti Steps Up

The second batch of practice sessions started in mixed conditions but the drying track saw some significant improvements on the times posted in morning practice. The lead changed hands many times throughout the 40 minutes but in the end it was Celestino Vietti who robbed home favourite Sergio Garcia of top spot. The Italian was two tenths of a second faster than his closest challenger, although Garcia was lucky to escape unscathed from an incident that saw teammate Ryusei Yamanaka running into the back of him at turn 1 and miraculously walk away. Romano Fenati joined the top three, ahead of Raul Fernandez and Filip Salac.

Tony Arbolino in sixth position was six tenths off the lead and the last rider within a second of the leader. Carlos Tatay was one of the early leaders before dropping back to seventh spot, ahead of Andrea Migno and Kaito Toba, with John McPhee completing the top ten. The final provisional top 14 positions went to Alonso Lopez, Yuki Kunii, early session leader Darryn Binder and returning Riccardo Rossi.

Championship leader Albert Arenas was back on track after a brief trip to the medical centre following a crash in FP1 but the Spaniard was not too keen to push in the changing conditions that don’t look likely to be replicated on Sunday. Arenas spent the entire session outside of the top 10 and finished 18th, two positions behind rival Ai Ogura. FP1 leader Jaume Masia was slow to improve on his own benchmark from FP1 and late improvements were only good enough for 21st on the timesheets, over two seconds slower than the leader.

2020 Europe Moto2 FP1 Result: Luthi Back In A Damp Limelight

Damp and drizzly Valencia was the backdrop for the intermediate class’ first practice session and much like their colleagues before them, they kept things uneventful until the closing stages got some gravel trap action. After a few less than stellar performances, Tom Luthi seemed to be enjoying his time in the limelight and took over the top of the timesheets halfway through the session. Despite a harmless crash at turn 6 with 15 minutes left, the Swiss rider kept top spot by a tenth of a second ahead of a persistently impressive Hector Garzo. Aron Canet was back in action after his little finger required some medical attention and the Spaniard returned straight to the top three positions and as the final rider within half a second of the leader in the tricky conditions.

Hafizh Syahrin was somewhat predictably the early leader of FP1 but dropped back to fourth and finished the session limping away from a high side at turn 14. Marco Bezzecchi joined the top five, ahead of championship leader Sam Lowes and Nicolo Bulega. Enea Bastianini avoided any crashes with a couple of saves at turn 14 and finished the morning 8th, with compatriots Simone Corsi and Lorenzo Baldassarri rounding out the top ten.

Luca Marini’s struggles seemed to continue in the difficult conditions at the Ricardo Tormo circuit and after a slow start he finished last on the timesheets and nearly four seconds down on Luthi. Meanwhile, Jake Dixon sat out the session with a stomach ache and is expected to join the action in FP2.

2020 Europe MotoGP FP1 Result: Miller Excels On Damp Track

An overcast and damp Ricardo Tormo Circuit welcomed the premier class for their first of quite a few outings in the Valencian autumn. Riders avoided too many off track excursions but the tricky conditions saw some oddities on the timesheets. Jack Miller being in charge of proceedings in wet conditions wasn’t one of them though, the Australian nearly half a tenth faster than Franco Morbidelli. The Italian fronted the Yamaha walk of shame following their surprise penalty on Thursday, while Repsol Honda rider Stefan Bradl thrived in the drizzle and joined the top three.

Johann Zarco made a late jump into fourth position, demoting Alex Marquez down to fifth, the Spaniard also giving him a helping hand by crashing out at turn 6 in the final handful of minutes. Danilo Petrucci was the next best Ducati in sixth, with Pol Espargaro and Miguel Oliveira placing two KTMs in the top eight in a weekend that didn’t start on the best terms for the Austrian factory, given Brad Binder’s long lap penalty and Iker Lecuona’s Covid-related absence.

Andrea Dovizioso made a bit of a better start in ninth position, while Maverick Vinales was not in a rush to join the action but after chasing around rival Joan Mir for a few laps, the Yamaha man settled for tenth in FP1. Takaaki Nakagami in 11th position was over a second slower than leader Miller and a couple tenths faster than Aleix Espargaro and Alex Rins. The lead title contenders didn’t seem to enjoy their time in damp Valencia, with Mir only 17th after an brief trek through the gravel at run 8 and Fabio Quartararo last on the timesheets, nearly three seconds slower than Miller and very unhappy as he returned to the pits.

2020 Europe Moto3 FP1 Result: Masia Makes A Wet Start

November welcomed the lightweight class with a wet misty morning in Valencia and while the conditions didn’t cause too much trouble to begin with, it got significantly more eventful in the final ten minutes, as riders were starting to push for improved laptimes. Jaume Masia continued to claim the top of the timesheets in the final couple of minutes of FP1, three tenths ahead of previous leader Tatsuki Suzuki. The Japanese rider also joined the crash list lineup with a late tumble at turn 12, while compatriot Kaito Toba completed the top three, four tenths off the lead.

Alonso Lopez climbed into fourth, half a second off the fastest time and promptly crashed out at turn 14, while Tony Arbolino in sixth position had done the same a bit earlier at turn 5. Andrea Migno was one of the riders who managed to enjoy an uneventful morning, the Italian leading the way for much of the session before dropping back to sixth position. John McPhee also avoided a crash but was not spared some rodeo moments on his way to seventh on the timesheets and over a second down on the leader. Niccolo Antonelli, Celestino Vietti and Gabriel Rodrigo rounded out the top ten.

Championship contenders Ai Ogura and Albert Arenas spent the morning outside of the top 20, but while the Japanese rider kept a low profile in the tricky conditions, the Spaniard was lucky to end the session unharmed after a late highside at turn 4.

2020 Teruel Moto2 Race Result: A Demolition Job From Start To Finish

Closing the second Aragon showdown was the intermediate class but the sun skipped this one and allowed some cloud cover and a bit of a breeze to join the party. That did not seem to impact Sam Lowes’ menacing speed in the slightest, the British rider making it three consecutive victories at the end of 21 perfect laps and taking over the lead in the championship. Fabio Di Giannantonio was over eight seconds slower by the checkered flag but scored his best result of the season with second position. Enea Bastianini joined the podium with another consistent performance to aid his title bid.

Poleman Lowes had made a solid launch off the line ahead of Remy Gardener and Di Giannantonio, while front row qualifier Jorge Navarro had a dreadful start and dropped to 10th. Lowes put in a gap of seven tenths by the end of lap one, while Di Giannantonio picked up the chase ahead of Jake Dixon, Gardner and Bastianini. Marcos Ramirez dropped one second behind the leaders and was coming under attack from Jorge Martin and Luca Marini, who were quick to join the top 10 having started on the fourth row. However, Marini was also getting harassed by Augusto Fernandez and Hector Garzo. Meanwhile, Marcos Bezzecchi kept station in 14th, ahead of slow-starting Navarro.

Lowes’ gap grew to two seconds by lap 4, with Di Giannantonio trying to stay one step ahead of the chasing group led by Gardner and Bastianini. Bastianini made a move on the next lap going into turn 16 and was left with a 1.7s gap to compatriot Di Giannantonio. Dixon and Ramirez were doing their best to tag along to the podium battle, while Martin was another second back, in the company of Fernandez and Garzo. Meanwhile, the SKY Racing boys’ nightmare in Aragon continued, with Marini dropping out of the top ten and Bezzecchi crashing out at turn 1 and pretty much ending his championship bid.

Back at the front, Lowes continued to extend his lead to over three seconds by lap 9, while Di Giannantonio had two seconds over Bastianini, who had company from Binder. Another two seconds back, Dixon was under attack from the Spanish foursome of Martin, Fernandez, Garzo and Ramirez. Martin and Fernandez made quick work of the British rider but Garzo crashed out at turn 8 one lap later and was promptly replaced by compatriot Navarro in that group. While his main title rivals were provisionally in podium positions, Marini left the point scoring places with 12 laps remaining.

With 9 laps left, Lowes, Di Giannantonio and Bastianini looked quite secure in their podium positions, with Gardner close enough to pick up the pieces from any mistake from the Italtrans rider, but the cameras were focused on the battle for fifth, where Fernandez, Navarro, Martin and Dixon were having some fun. Navarro looked like the man with the best pace apart from the leader and was probably rueing that poor start. A couple of crashes in the top 10 and some late pace from Marini brought the Italian back into the points in 12th position.

The final handful of laps were a steady procession to the line, Lowes taking the checkered flag eight seconds ahead of Di Giannantonio, with Bastianini securing the final podium position. Gardner held off Navarro for fourth, with the rest of the top ten places going to Martin, Dixon, Fernandez, Ramirez and Joe Roberts. Marini got past Xavi Vierge late on to climb into 11th position and grab a handful of points.

With Lowes taking the win and the championship lead, Bastianini is his main pursuer, 7 points down on the Marc VDS rider. Marini’s deficit grows to 23 points, while teammate Bezzecchi is a distant 48 points down after a dismal couple of weeks in Aragon.

2020 Teruel MotoGP Race Result: Broken Dreams And Dream Comebacks

Expectations were sky high ahead of the second premier class clash in Aragon, especially for the Honda camp, but the 2020 season likes to reverse fortunes come Sunday afternoon and saw one Yamaha one step ahead of the competition. Franco Morbidelli led all the way from turn 5 on the first lap to the checkered flag to secure a second victory of the season, keeping the Suzuki’s at bay. Alex Rins looked like he was preparing a late bid for the win but had to wave the white flag in the final handful of laps, while Joan Mir made it a third consecutive double podium for Suzuki. Having started 12th, the youngster made a quick comeback to join the podium and extend his lead in the world championship.

Honda’s dream weekend quickly turned into a nightmare, as Takaaki Nakagami led from pole position into turn one from fellow front row starters Morbidelli and Rins, but did not make it past turn 5 as he got harshly punished for taking a slightly wide line. That left Morbidelli and Rins in charge of proceedings, with Johann Zarco third, while Mir had made a lightning start to go from 12th of the grid to fifth on lap one, sandwiched between title rivals Maverick Vinales and Fabio Quartararo. Cal Crutchlow, Pol Espargaro, Alex Marquez and Miguel Oliveira completed the top ten after the first lap, while Jack Miller and Brad Binder tangled at turn 2 and ended in the gravel.

By lap 3, a lead group of five was building a one second gap to Quartararo, who was holding off the remaining Hondas and KTMs. Cal Crutchlow was sniffing around the Frenchman for a while but Alex Marquez picked up that mission and got past the Petronas man by lap four. The Spaniard seemed to have warmed up his hard front tyre nicely and did not need long to catch up with the leaders, Mir getting a déjà vu by lap five, with Marquez on his tail and Vinales ahead of him. The trio were pushing to catch up with Zarco, who was being dropped by the two leaders, Morbidelli setting a fast pace ahead of Rins. Meanwhile, Andrea Dovizioso was up to 12th, having started 17th.

By lap 6, Morbidelli and Rins had one second of advantage over Zarco, who in turn had one second in hand over the chasing group, where Mir and Marquez took control from Vinales and looked threatening for the lone Ducati in the podium battle. Vinales seemed to be losing a few tenths here and there and dropped into the clutches of future teammate Quartararo, who had a sizeable group waiting to pounce, including Crutchlow, Aleix Espargaro, Dovizioso and all the KTMs left in the race.

Back at the front, Morbidelli and Rins had a comfortable lead of almost two seconds over Zarco by lap ten but the Frenchman had Mir and Marquez breathing down his neck. The Spaniards bided their time despite seeing the leaders break away, until Mir attacked with 13 laps remaining and Marquez followed his example that same lap at turn 16. The Ducati briefly fought back at turn 1 but had no answer for the Honda for the rest of the lap. However, the exchange left Marquez one second behind Mir, who was slow to reel in the leaders. Meanwhile, Vinales and Quartararo seemed to be having a repeat of last weekend, with Pol Espargaro and Oliveira keen to push them towards the bottom of the top ten and with Crutchlow and Dovizioso also up for the fight.

The final 10 laps started with Morbidelli and Rins still comfortably in the lead, but Mir got some breathing space after Alex Marquez’s hard front had enough at turn 2 and ruled him out of a podium hattrick, leaving the premier class with no riders to have finished all races. Zarco was left three seconds down on the podium positions and two and a half seconds ahead of Pol Espargaro, who had broken apart from Vinales and the feisty battle between Oliveira and Quartararo. Dovizioso must have felt like Christmas came early as he saw Quartararo only half a second ahead of him with 8 laps remaining but he immediately ran wide at the reverse corkscrew and dropped outside of the top ten once again.

Rins was yet to show a wheel to Morbidelli but there was no rush as Mir did not seem able to reduce the gap significantly. However, Morbidelli had other plans and started to drop Rins, the gap nearing one second with 6 laps remaining. Mir had a pretty lonely ride behind them, but no such luck for Zarco, who was getting reeled in by Pol Espargaro and Oliveira after the KTM duo dropped Vinales. Espargaro robbed former teammate Zarco of fourth with 3 laps remaining and Oliveira tried to replicate that but Zarco wasn’t keen on giving up another position. Another second down the road, Quartararo encountered an unlikely adversary in Aleix Espargaro in the battle for 8th position, but the Aprilia suffered some sort of failure at the final turn with three laps left.

Morbidelli took the checkered flag two seconds ahead of Rins, with Mir making it another solid day for Suzuki. Pol Espargaro in fourth scored KTM’s best result around Motorland Aragon and Zarco completed the top five as the best Ducati rider, followed by Oliveira, Vinales, Quartararo, Lecuona and Petrucci in the top ten. Dovizioso continued to fade in the closing stages, dropping down to 13th position.

Mir’s solid run of podiums extends his lead in the world championship to 14 points from an underwhelming Quartararo, with Vinales another 5 points back. Morbidelli’s victory brings him back in contention, 25 points down on the leader, while Dovizioso drops to fifth, 28 points behind Mir. Rins goes to Valencia sixth, with a 32 point deficit.

2020 Teruel Moto3 Race Result: Practice Makes Perfect

The lightweight class opened the show in front of the great wall of Aragon and provided the usual amount of entertainment until the final turn of the final lap. Although Albert Arenas seemed to be the strongest rider over the 19 laps, the long run into turn 16 was his downfall and Jauma Masia took advantage to score an Aragon double and get right back into title contention while scoring Honda’s 800th Grand Prix victory across all classes. The final couple of corners also rewarded Ayumu Sasaki with a maiden podium in second position, while compatriot and KTM colleague Kaito Toba shared the cava in third.

The first lap told a different story, with Tony Arbolino getting the best launch off the line but quickly under attack from poleman Raul Fernandez at turn 2, with title rivals Arenas and Celestino Vietti straight into the mix. Arenas didn’t take long to claim the lead on the back straight but Fernandez hit straight back into turn 1. Meanwhile, John McPhee had started 17th and was up to 10th by the end of lap 1, in close proximity to rival Ai Ogura.

Gabriel Rodrigo tried his hand at the lead at turn 16 next time around but turn 1 was once again Fernandez’ strong point. That did not stop the Argentine rider from trying again on lap three and that time he kept it past turn 1, aided by Vietti and Sasaki attacking the poleman. Vietti soon became a threat for the lead and started lap five ahead of Sasaki, Arenas, Darryn Binder and Toba, with Rodrigo and Fernandez dropping out of the top five in the finish straight slipstream bonanza, together with Masia and Arbolino. Meanwhile, both McPhee and Ogura were dropping positions towards the bottom of the top 15 but were still in the leading group.

With the generous slipstreaming opportunities, the lead had changed hands on every lap, until Arenas took his turn on lap 6 and actually held on for two full laps. While Fernandez was still fighting to rejoin the top five, teammate Toba was attacking the leader and briefly robbing him of top spot on lap 8. Right behind that battle, Masia and Binder were joined by McPhee inside the top five, while Ogura was pushing to get into point scoring positions.

While Toba continued to bother Arenas, the championship leader always found a way back into the lead by turn 1 and started the final half of the race ahead of a leading group of about 25 riders. Toba’s charge seemed to have faded a bit and left the likes of Binder, Masia and Vietti to challenge the leader, while Sergio Garcia went under the radar to join the top 5, having started 28th on the grid. Sasaki, Toba, Arbolino, McPhee and Fernandez were still in the top ten positions, while Ogura finally broke into the points and was hoping to have a say in the sizeable podium battle.

Although Arenas was mostly unbothered at the front, the likes of Masia, Binder and Vietti were still looking for a way past. Masia tested the waters a couple of times at the final turn but Arenas always found the inside by turn 1. If Arenas needed another reason to worry, a track limits warning with four laps to go provided that but it did not seem to affect his speed much and although Masia changed tactic and overtook at turn 1 instead, Arenas still found a way past soon after. Arenas started the final two laps holding Masia at bay, while the battle for third was unfolding between the likes of McPhee, Toba, Vietti and Binder.

All the back straight dress rehearsals for Masia paid off on the final lap, the Leopard rider getting past Arenas and was immediately followed by Sasaki and Toba, Arenas finding himself off the podium in the blink of an eye. Title rival Vietti completed the top five, ahead of McPhee and an impressive Deniz Oncu. Binder finished ahead of Ogura and Arbolino in the rest of the top ten positions, aided by an unfortunate last lap crash for Tatsuki Suzuki and Garcia. Alonso Lopez did well to finish 11th after serving a long lap penalty, ahead of poleman Fernandez.

Arenas continues to lead in the world championship standings, 19 points ahead of Ogura, with Vietti another point down and Masia up to fourth, 24 points behind the leader.
