Jorge Lorenzo ended the second session of practice at Motegi. The Movistar Yamaha rider jumped to the top of the timesheet at the very end of the session, as the riders all jostled for a shot at Q2.
Fastest man in the morning Andrea Dovizioso could not quite match Lorenzo's pace, the factory Ducati rider jumping up to 2nd, and just nudging Suzuki's Maverick Viñales into 3rd. Marc Marquez could not improve beyond 4th, his final run disturbed by a very low speed lowside at Turn 10.
Marquez' fall triggered a spate of crashes. As Marquez was crashing at Turn 10, Dani Pedrosa was flung into the air in a massive highside at the other end of the back straight, landing heavily at Turn 11 and being taken off to the Medical Center clutching his shoulder. That proved to be a bad omen: Pedrosa was diagnosed with a fractured collarbone, and is almost certain to miss Motegi and the other two flyaways. Eugene Laverty suffered a smaller highside at Turn 6, and though he was stretchered away from the track, turned up walking to the Medical Center. Jack Miller was the luckiest of the crashers, walking away from a lowside.
