2016 Magny-Cours World Superbike Superpole: Dampened Track, Not Spirits

Superpole one took place on a damp track after an overnight downpour. Markus Reiterberger and Matthieu Lagrive wielding the 76 Kawasaki, cosplaying Loris Baz, were the two favourites to progress from their times yesterday, but the damp track favoured Davide Giugliano in morning's wet session.

Davide Giugliano, however, crashed out on his out lap and struggled to lift his bike with his injured shoulder while Matthieu Lagrive set the first benchmark with a 2'01.231. Matthieu Lussiana took the top spot but was knocked down the order with Lagrive over a second and a half quicker than Nicky Hayden who was second quickest.

Another round of times and Lagrive one again chopped over a second off his best time, down to 1'56.925. Alex De Angelis was half a second off Lagrive's pace while Davide Giugliano, finally getting back out on track, was third quickest on his first timed lap. Matthieu Lussiana crashed out on a promising lap while Davide Giugliano, on his second lap, took the top spot from Lagrive with a 1'56.494.

As the clock ticked down, it looked like Giugliano and Lagrive would secure their entry into Superpole Two but Nicky Hayden finally got to grips with the conditions and surprisingly took the top spot after several languid laps.

With the flag out, Giugliano didn't have a decent lap left and it remained to be seen if Lagrive would beat him out of contention, joining Hayden in Superpole two, or if Brookes could keep his fast lap going.

Brookes crashed out coming out of the chicane at turn twelve while Lagrive not only qualified for the next session, but he took top spot from Nicky Hayden who would join him in Superpole two. Davide Giugliano would start the races from thirteenth place, missing out on a promotion by three quarters of a second.

Twelve riders set out to compete for pole position on a damp track in the second session, and after one lap, Lagrive knocked Leon Camier off the top spot until Jonathan Rea took it off him with a 1'55.640, over two and a half seconds quicker than Lagrive. Camier's second lap was the second best, two thirds of a second off Rea, but Rea extended his lead over Camier and was joined by Tom Sykes under 1'56. Rea responded with a 1'54.657.

When Sykes got under 1'55, Rea went under 1'54, finding pace a lap before Sykes and Davies. Rea messed up his fourth lap but Sykes didn't, with a 1'53.593, relaxing after crossing the line while Rea behind him kept pushing to the flag.

Leon Camier, fifth quickest, crashed out at turn one and Chaz Davies had yellow flags to contend with because of that. Jonathan Rea, ahead of the crash, was unhindered and he recorded a 1'52.881, seven tenths ahead of Sykes in second and over a second clear of Davies in third. Sylvain Guintoli was fourth in front of the French fans with Camier and Michael van der Mark joining him on the second row.

Jonathan Rea took his first pole position of the year at a track where he won twice last year.

Update: Davide Giugliano has been declared unfit for the remainder of the weekend; his shoulder, and his thirteenth place, obviously causing issues.
