Jorge Lorenzo saw off a strong challenge from Maverick Viñales to take top spot in the afternoon session of free practice for the MotoGP class. The Movistar Yamaha rider had led for much of the session, just ahead of his teammate Valentino Rossi, until Viñales started to push in the final minutes of the session. The Suzuki rider was the first man to get into the 1'41s, but Lorenzo was not to be denied. Pushing for a quick lap, Lorenzo opened a gap of nearly a quarter of a second.
Cal Crutchlow took third spot, the LCR Honda rider finding a big burst of speed, and a general improvement for both himself and the Repsol Hondas. Dani Pedrosa, fourteenth in the morning, jumped up to fourth in the afternoon, while Scott Redding put the Pramac Ducati into fifth, and was the fastest Ducati. Valentino Rossi did not improve his time late in the session, dropping to sixth on the timesheets, ahead of Hector Barbera on the Avintia Ducati and Andrea Iannone on the factory Ducati. Marc Marquez ended up in ninth, just ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.
