2016 Sepang World Superbike Superpole Results: Is that Rain?

As Superpole One started, so did the rain. The riders left the pits with slick tyres before the weather made its mind up and the race for a banker lap was on.

Patel Szkopek beat the rain to set a 2'12.277, with Leon Camier fluffing a quicker lap as the conditions worsened. Tom Sykes read the conditions well and put in a 2'12.029 on his first flying lap as almost everyone pitted in. Sykes stayed out with Imre Toth, learning the conditions, while everyone else got new tyres.

As the session looked done, the sun came out and the track came back. Leon Camier recorded a 2'06.397, but Tom Sykes, not having pitted, beat the MV Agusta rider with a 2'05.159. A lap later and he sliced another two-thirds of a second off, using the rest of the extra session as practice for Superpole two.

Tom Sykes, with fifteen more minutes than everyone else, set an early target time of 2'03.544 on regular rubber, ahead of Nicky Hayden and Chaz Davies.

Davies was the first rider out with the qualifying tyre on, and he knocked 0.59 seconds off Sykes's time but was soon beaten by five hundredths of a second by Nicky Hayden. Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea had het to set a lap on qualifying rubber, and Rea was the first of the pair to hit the flag and he did so with a 2'03.021, the quickest time yet, but Tom Sykes, with fifteen more minutes practice, crushed the competition with a new fastest lap, three quarters of a second faster than anyone else, a 2'02.246.

Alex Lowes just managed to split the Kawasakis, exactly matching the missing Sylvain Guintoli's outright record from 2014, with a 2'03.002, but Tom Sykes once again showed that he's the fastest man on the "Q".

As if it knew the schedule, the rain returned as the riders pulled up in parc fermé.

I would love to see what westy could do with a proper competitive bike. He is often impressive on inferior equipment.
