Sepang Jan '08 Test Day 3 Times - Hayden Smashes Circuit Record

The final day of testing at Sepang threw up a few surprises to add to the drama of the first two days. The biggest surprise was the return of Nicky Hayden to the top of the timesheets, after a couple of days ending mid-pack. The Kentucky Kid's was back with a vengeance, shattering Valentino Rossi's circuit lap record by nearly 3/10ths of a second.

Hayden wasn't the only rider to smash records, both Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner went faster than the race lap record on race tires today, proving beyond any doubt that the 800s are already faster than the old 990s were.

Casey Stoner also came close to Rossi's circuit lap record on qualifiers, setting the 2nd fastest time of the day, after being blisteringly fast on race tires. Behind Stoner, the Yamahas continued their strong form, with rookie and 250 world champion Jorge Lorenzo putting in yet another strong time to take 3rd fastest, ahead of Colin Edwards on the Tech 3 M1.

John Hopkins was 5th fastest, getting the Kawasaki up to speed quickly, making his switch to Team Green look like a very savvy move. Behind Hopkins, Valentino Rossi was 6th fastest, nearly 3/4 of a second slower than his rookie team mate Lorenzo. Andrea Dovizioso was fastest of the satellite Hondas, ahead of James Toseland on the other Tech 3 Yamaha. Toseland got off to a slow start in Malaysia, but has steadily climbed up the timesheets day by day.

Toseland's climb is in contrast to the slide of the Suzukis. Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi started the test near the front, but have failed to find the improvements that the rest of the field have managed.

But the big loser from the test is once again Marco Melandri. Melandri, like Capirossi before him, is struggling to find his feet on the Ducati GP8, and must be disappointed to only manage the 14th fastest time. And it's not just Melandri: the satellite Ducatis of Toni Elias and Sylvain Guintoli are also way down the field. The Ducati is surely an incredibly fast bike, but so far, only Casey Stoner seems capable of taming the beast.

Testing continues next week at Phillip Island in Australia.

Sepang Jan '08 Test Day 2 Times - De Puniet Fastest Once Again

After the drama of Day 1, the second day of testing at Sepang got off to a much more normal start. Adding to the sense of normality was Casey Stoner, performing his usual trick of being fast right out of the gate and setting the fastest time early. But Stoner would not sit atop the timesheets for too long. By midday, Colin Edwards had taken over top spot on the Tech 3 Yamaha, only to pass the baton on to Randy de Puniet in the afternoon.

The Frenchman was once again the fastest rider of the day, taking 2/10ths off his fastest time from yesterday. How much we can read into his time is hard to say, as De Puniet's LCR Honda was almost certainly running qualifiers at the time.

Encouragingly for Yamaha, the next three fastest times were all set by M1s, with Colin Edwards leading the Fiat Yamaha team mates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, leaving Casey Stoner's Ducati down in 5th. Stoner was followed by the Kawasaki of John Hopkins and the Suzuki of Loris Capirossi.

Despite the fast times set by De Puniet and Stoner, both the Hondas and the Ducatis are struggling most. Stoner's team mate is still struggling with the Ducati GP8, setting a very disappointing 16th fastest time, in a foreboding echo of Loris Capirossi's struggles in 2007. At Honda, with Dani Pedrosa back home with a broken hand, Nicky Hayden is left to test the new bikes on his own. HRC has bought several different engine and chassis combinations to test, which may explain The Kentucky Kid's mediocre 10th time. The satellite Hondas, running what is basically the bike which Dani Pedrosa won the final GP of 2007 at Valencia on, are faring a little better, with Shinya Nakano and Andrea Dovizioso finishing ahead of Hayden on the 2008 RC212V.

Testing completes tomorrow.

Final Times From Day 2 of Jerez Test

Dani Pedrosa ended top of the heap on the second day of the MotoGP test in Jerez, pipping Valentino Rossi to the post, and being the first rider to crack into the 1'39 bracket. Pedrosa set his fast lap on the 2008 version of the Honda RC212V, demonstrating that HRC has learned its lesson from the beating it took early in the 2007 season. Rossi set his fastest lap on qualifying tires, which he commented were not quite as good as the Michelins. Otherwise, Rossi is pleased with Bridgestones, claiming he has found real improvements with edge grip, despite the tires' construction being softer and less rigid than Yamaha expected.

Rossi has been testing the 2007 tires, while Casey Stoner went out on 2008 rubber and crashed heavily, which Rossi put down to the tires not warming up quickly enough. Stoner injured some ligaments in his left shoulder, the result of a nasty Turn 3 highsider. His injuries compounded the problems he was already having with his right shoulder, after falling on the first day of the test as well. As a result of his injuries, Stoner has decided to pull out of the test, and concentrate on healing up before testing recommences at Sepang in January.

The timesheets were dominated by Hondas, with Valentino Rossi the only non-Honda rider in the top 7. With Stoner out, the main burden of testing will fall on Marco Melandri, but the Italian is still having a torrid time adapting to the Ducati. The Bologna factory must surely hope that Melandri will start to meld with the bike very soon.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Rizla Suzuki completed a two-day test at Phillip Island, a track where the team has been tragically, and inexplicably slow at. No times were released, but Chris Vermeulen stated that he'd gone faster during the test than he had ever gone at Phillip Island, and the team seemed pleased with the progress made so far.

Back at Jerez, testing finishes tomorrow, after which the MotoGP teams will take a forced break until mid-January, with the MotoGP winter testing ban commencing on December 1st.
