The final session of the day got underway in beautiful conditions in Portimao and it was Sam Lowes who achieved a pole hat-trick and all time lap record after leading the way throughout Q2. The British rider ended the day with a little tumble at turn 11 but Remy Gardner could not find those couple hundredths of a second to demote him and settled for second. If the top two was quite predictable, there were a few more surprises behind them, where Xavi Vierge went through Q1 to climb onto the front row of the grid, under two tenths off pole.
Rookie Ai Ogura did another phenomenal job to open the second row of the grid, initially ahead of fellow rookie Raul Fernandez, but the Spaniard’s best time got cancelled due to a yellow flag infringement and it promoted Marco Bezzecchi and Augusto Fernandez to row two. Albert Arenas also overcame Q1 to join row three, while Joe Roberts seemed to struggle more than in practice and could only achieve eighth position. Aron Canet’s early hot lap was good enough to break the lap record but the Spaniard slid all the way down to ninth place as the session progressed.
Fernandez had to make do with tenth, opening the fourth row ahead of Q1 leader Somkiat Chantra and Hector Garzo, while Cameron Beaubier, Jake Dixon and Nicolo Bulega completed row five. The likes of Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marcos Ramirez did not feature greatly in proceedings and could only qualify 16th and 17th, while Tom Luthi took his sweet time to do a flying lap in Q1 and once he did, it was only fast enough for 22nd. Still not as unlucky as Jorge Navarro, who started Q1 with a big highside at turn 11 and will have to fight from the back of the grid.

A warm but cloudy Algarve Circuit was the scene of another ruthless battle for pole position in the premier class. After showing off his pace in FP4, Fabio Quartararo got straight down to business in Q2 and showed off his one lap speed as well, beating the all time lap record on his first flying lap. The Frenchman looked untouchable at the top until Pecco Bagnaia blitzed past on his final flying lap but once the celebratory wheelies were done, his time was scrapped for a yellow flag infringement, which put Quartararo back on pole. Alex Rins made Suzuki proud with his late jump to the middle of the front row, while Johann Zarco started Q2 with a crash at turn 11 but turned it around to add a Ducati to the front row.
Jack Miller came within seven hundredths of a second of the front row but fourth position was impressive enough after his recent trip to the surgeon, a small gap keeping him ahead of a consistent Franco Morbidelli. Marc Marquez spent both qualifying sessions making frenemies of the Suzukis, first chasing Joan Mir to top Q1 and then tailing Rins on his way to the second row of the grid.
Aleix Espargaro opens row three for Aprilia, ahead of Luca Marini, who used pal Bagnaia as a reference to grab a fine eighth position on his first trip to Q2. Unlike Marquez, Joan Mir used up his last fresh soft rear tyre early in Q2 and then dropped down the timesheets to ninth place.
Miguel Oliveira opens fourth row and his fast crash at turn 9 was what prompted the yellow flag that spelled trouble for the man keeping him company on the grid, dropping Bagnaia to 11th position. Maverick Vinales had a pretty disastrous session, one hot lap getting cancelled due to a yellow flag and then seeing his next attempt hindered by marginally exceeding track limits, the Spaniard ending the day in 12th.
Honda colleagues Alex Marquez and Pol Espargaro missed out on Q2 but will open the fifth row of the grid, in the company of Brad Binder. The remaining Honda of Takaaki Nakagami did not take part in qualifying after also sitting out FP4 and part of FP3 due to the heavy impact of his crash on Friday. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin was declared unfit for the race due to head, hand and ankle contusions which are being further investigated in hospital.
The sky got a few more patches of grey throughout the final practice session for the premier class but did not hinder the action, which mostly consisted of Fabio Quartararo showing off at the top of the timesheets. The Frenchman was the only one posting times in the high 1:39s and showed great rhythm on both the medium and hard rear tyre. Home favourite Miguel Oliveira was two tenths of a second slower and pretty consistent but not quite on par on pace with Quartararo. Championship leader Johann Zarco came close as well and displayed solid pace of his own.
Maverick Vinales did not threaten the lead of the session but put in a strong run on well used medium tyres on his way to fourth position, narrowly ahead of Pecco Bagnaia. Franco Morbidelli added another Yamaha to the mix in sixth spot, while Alex Marquez made a late jump into seventh. Jack Miller in eighth was three tenths down on the leader and fairly consistent on pace as well. We did not have to wait long for Marc Marquez’s first big save of the season, the Spaniard putting the knee to good use at turn 14, on his way to ninth place, while world champion Joan Mir rounded out the top ten, four tenths off top spot.
17 riders posted a time within a second of the leader, including Pol Espargaro, who limped away from a big highside at turn 15 and Luca Marini, who lost the front at turn 9 in a fast but luckily harmless crash. Takaaki Nakagami and Jorge Martin did not feature in this session, the Japanese rider still struggling with the aftermath of his crash on Friday, while the Spaniard is undergoing further checks at the hospital after his scary crash this morning.
There was a hint of cloud cover over the Algarve circuit as the lightweight class were lining up to battle for the third pole position of the season but the only concern riders had was about possible penalties following the usual tango on the outlap setting up the final time attack. One man who had little to be worried about was Andrea Migno, the Italian hitting form in Portimao and leading the way throughout Q2 to get his first pole position in over a year. Compatriot Dennis Foggia made a late jump to join him on the front row, while Jeremy Alcoba did well to qualify third but will start the race from pitlane with a five second delay after his escalated disagreement with John McPhee at Losail. That promotes Sergio Garcia to the front row of the grid, the Spaniard finishing fourth and four tenths off pole.
Gabriel Rodrigo looked like a serious challenger after the first run but stuck bad luck once again as Filip Salac tagged his machine on the final flying lap and took both riders out of contention. The Gresini rider was lucky to keep fifth position and open the second row of the grid. He would have been accompanied by John McPhee, but the Petronas Sprinta rider has a pitlane start penalty to serve as well, with a ten-second delay, which allowed Deniz Oncu and Darryn Binder to complete row two. Rookie Xavier Artigas is set to open the third row ahead of Q1 graduate Ayumu Sasaki and Qatar 1 victor Jaume Masia, while Qatar 2 winner Pedro Acosta will start from the fourth row together with Tatsuki Suzuki and Q1 leader Romano Fenati.
Rookies Izan Guevara and Adrian Fernandez also showed good speed to join the fifth row, ahead of Niccolo Antonelli, who missed out on the final time attack after joining the track too late. The big loser of Q1 was Kaito Toba, who will have to make a good start from 21st on the grid, after a late tumble in the first qualifying session.

A nice and sunny day encouraged the intermediate class to take their turn for the final practice session and riders fought for that precious top 14 until the very last second. Although Aron Canet briefly broke the lap record in the final three minutes, his time got cancelled for exceeding track limits, so Remy Gardner got to keep both the record and top spot in FP3. Friday leader Joe Roberts took his time to go any faster but eventually did and was two tenths slower than Gardner, with championship leader Sam Lowes close by.
Marcos Ramirez put the injury from Qatar behind him and found his way into a fine fourth position, while rookie Raul Fernandez had to settle for fifth after leading the way for much of the session. Marco Bezzecchi and Jake Dixon came next and both were within half a second of the leader, while Canet dropped to eighth after seeing his top time cancelled. Rookie Ai Ogura continues to impress, this time finishing ninth, while Hector Garzo rounded out the top ten.
The remaining Q2 positions went to Nicolo Bulega, Yari Montella, Augusto Fernandez and Fabio Di Giannantonio, the Speed Up rookie particularly impressive as he outperformed teammate Jorge Navarro on a familiar track. However, it was a close field overall, with 23 riders posting times within a second of the leader.

Under baby blue skies and beautifully dry asphalt, the premier class got some solid race pace work done in FP3, ahead of the tense final shootout for Q2 positions. Unfortunately, the session also featured a red flag following a frightening crash for Jorge Martin at turn seven, which saw the rookie taken to the Medical Centre by ambulance but thankfully conscious. Once action restarted, riders were left with only four minutes to make an impact on the timesheets and some needed it more than others. Fabio Quartararo casually strolled out of pitlane after his rivals were long gone, confident in his top time and with very impressive pace until that point. The Frenchman needn’t have bothered as no one challenged best time and he finished the morning at the top of the pile.
Franco Morbidelli was one of the first riders to challenge Friday’s top 10 and was back to his best after a tricky outing in Qatar. The Italian went under the radar on Friday but confirmed his speed in FP3 by only trailing the leader by half a tenth. Pecco Bagnaia was the lead Ducati after a solid session partly spent at the top of the timing screens and eventually finished seven hundredths of a second behind Quartararo. Colleague Johann Zarco was another tenth down, while Alex Rins was the sole Suzuki in the top ten, making a late jump into the top five.
Jack Miller in sixth position was the last man within half a second of Quartararo, while Luca Marini impressed with seventh place and his first time going directly into Q2. Aleix Espargaro and Miguel Oliveira were fast and consistent throughout the session and managed to secure Q2 spots as well. Maverick Vinales was one of the riders who had to rely on their final flying lap and the Spaniard just about held onto the top 10.
Alex Marquez spent quite a bit of time inside Q2 worthy positions but a highside at turn 3 on his final flying lap allowed rivals to jump ahead and it made a bad day even worse for the LCR Honda team, where Takaaki Nakagami sat out half the session due to severe collarbone pain following Friday’s crash. Joan Mir had no obvious excuse for only finishing 12th on the timesheets, seven tenths of a second slower than Quartararo and marginally faster than Pol Espargaro and Valentino Rossi. After putting almost full distance in a set of medium tyres, Marc Marquez struggled to get the best of the soft rear and coupled with some mistakes and seeing his brother fly through the air right in front of him, that left the Honda man down in 15th position and on the pretty competitive list for Q1.
After rain and damp patches affected both of their practice sessions on Friday, the lightweight class had a lot of work to do in FP3, aided by clear blue skies this time around. Riders were quick to challenge the established top 14 hierarchy from FP2 but as usual, it all came down to the time attack in the final handful of minutes, when they surprisingly gave themselves a generous two flying laps to settle Q2 positions. After Niccolo Antonelli led the way throughout the session, it was compatriot Andrea Migno who eventually got the spoils, going from 12th to first on his final lap. That demoted Gabriel Rodrigo to second by five hundredths of a second, while teammates Jaume Masia and Pedro Acosta rode together to third and fourth positions.
Darryn Binder in fifth place was only a tenth and a half slower than the leader. Jeremy Alcoba finished the morning sixth and joins Q2, although a pitlane start awaits the Spaniard after his squabble with John McPhee at Losail. Dennis Foggia found some speed to climb up to seventh position, while early leader Antonelli drops to eighth place. Tatsuki Suzuki managed to keep ninth spot despite a late tumble at turn 8, while Sergio Garcia rounded out the top ten.
The remaining top 14 positions were secured by rookie Xavier Artigas, Deniz Oncu, John McPhee and Filip Salac. Given his pitlane start penalty, the Scotsman did the most running and kept us entertained throughout the lull before the time attack, while Salac was the beneficiary of two cancelled laptimes for Izan Guevara and Carlos Tatay due to yellow flag infringements, which promoted him to 14th position.
