2016 Imola World Supersport Superpole Results: Packed To The Gunwales

Twenty-seven riders competed for two places in World Supersport's Superpole one with Roberto Rolfo and Kyle Smith as the favourites to get promoted to the second session. On a track like Imola, starting near the front is important as it's so narrow that over thirty bikes can clog the place up in no time.

Rolfo was the first rider under 1'53 and sat at the top unchallenged until everyone changed tyres. Alex Baldolini sidled into second place on another MV Agusta and then increased the pace the lap after, but he was still four hundredths of a second off. On new tyres, Zulfahmi Khairuddin took the top spot only to be beaten by Rolfo and Nico Terol. Alex Baldolini then took the top spot only for Khairuddin to reclaim his crown.

Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Alex Baldolini qualified for the second session decisively, with Khairuddin's 1'52.060 over six tenths of a second ahead of the third-fastest man, Nico Terol. Kyle Smith and Roberto Rolfo completed the fifth row.

The second session was delayed for track conditions at turn 13, the Acque Minerali section, the scene of Guintoli's crash in Superbike qualifying.

Kenan Sofuoglu was the first under 1'52 but Jules Cluzel joined him by beating him. Sofuoglu wasted no time in taking the top spot back and then upped the pace once more as the other eleven riders nipped in to change tyres.

As the clock ticked down, riders jostled for position behind Sofuoglu but with eleven seconds before the chequered flag came out, Jules Cluzel ripped out a 1'51.132 for pole position. Kenan Sofuoglu was second quickest, unable to catch the Frenchman, only setting a faster time that didn't count, having not seen the chequered flag. PJ Jacobsen took third place while Randy Krummenacher missed out on the front row with the fourth quickest time.

On a track like Imola, starting near the front is important. Jules Cluzel said that it would be difficult to beat Sofuoglu tomorrow as his race pace is exceedingly quick.
