2016 Imola World Superbike Superpole Results: Watch Out For The Sensors

Chaz Davies was quickest in all three sessions and was aiming to put his Ducati Panigale on pole position at the Italian marque's home race. Two chicanes at Imola have sensors to verify that they aren't being cut and every session has been littered with deleted lap times.

Xavi Fores and Michael van der Mark set early 1'48 times on their first flying laps with Nicky Hayden getting close a couple of laps in, pushing Josh Brookes and Karel Abraham down a place. Fores improved his quickest time before everyone pitted in for the mid-session tyre change. Alex Lowes finally recorded a lap with less than four minutes remaining and went third quickest.

Nicky Hayden, out on a fresh tyre, instantly went to the top with a 1'47.757 and was joined by Alex Lowes a quarter of a second behind, but Xavi Fores joined Hayden in the 1'47s and put himself in second at the flag while Michael van der Mark was circulating at a pace that would put him in top place.

Michael van der Mark, with a 1'47.602, and Nicky Hayden qualified both their Hondas to the second session, thwarting great efforts by Xavi Fores, Alex Lowes and Josh Brookes who would comprise the fifth row.

Jonathan Rea, wearing the number one plate, was the first rider out as usual, but Davide Giugliano was quickest on the first laps. Chaz Davies went under 1'47 and held the top spot briefly until Jonathan Rea set a 1'46.790 but Sykvain Guintoli had a huge crash and the red flags came out so the ambulance could take Guintoli to the medical centre and made the mid-session tyre change pit-in obligatory with nine and a half minutes remaining.

Would riders turn this into a two-stop strategy or would they just go out for one hot lap on the qualifying tyre?

Davide Giugliano slapped a 1'46.055 down on qualifying rubber and not even Tom Sykes behind him could beat him. It took the dominant Chaz Davies on the other Ducati to finally get under the 1'46es with a 1'45.598, breaking the lap record in the process. Jonathan Rea left it until almost everyone else had shot their bolt and was the only rider with a chance to beat Davies at the flag, but he couldn't beat the Ducatis and took third place from Tom Sykes.

Chaz Davies, after ending every session this weekend quickest, continued his run and took pole position with the fastest Superbike lap at Imola with his Ducati teammate Davide Giugliano second-quickest next to him on the grid. Jonathan Rea took the last place on the front row, pushing his Kawasaki teammate back to the second row in fourth place. Lorenzo Savadori and Jordi Torres rounded out the second row and Leon Camier, with good pace all weekend, did try a two-stop strategy and ended the session in seventh place.

Sylvain Guintoli was reported as conscious in the medical centre and was under medical assessment. Update: Guintoli has been declared unfit for the race.

That was a pretty nasty crash for Sylvain! You don't get to see that kind of highsider very often anymore in WSBK and/or MotoVRGP. In addition to that the Cresent team seems to be going backward instead of forward in the development of the Yam R1. Can't imaging their Japanese overlords to be very happy with the current situation. Get well soon, Sylvain!
