2016 Qatar Moto3 FP1 Result: Loi and Navarro Lay Down the Law

The 2016 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season got underway in customary form: on a dusty Losail circuit producing relatively slow times and treacherous conditions. There were multiple crashes during the first forty minute session of free practice for the Moto3 class, with Niccolo Antonelli and Andrea Locatelli among the fallers.

The track started to clean up towards the end of the session, allowing the Moto3 riders to switch their medium tires for the softer option. That saw RW Racing GP's Livio Loi top the timesheets, the Belgian rider putting in an impressive lap mostly on his own. He ended just ahead of Jorge Navarro, the Estrella Galicia rider dominating the first session of practice, before just losing out at the end.

But both Loi and Navarro had a clear lead, up over half a second over the chasing pack, with impressive rookie Nicolo Bulega at its head. Bulega finished a tenth ahead of Andrea Migno, and a fifteen hundredths in front of his teammate, Romano Fenati. Brad Binder took sixth, ahead of Maria Herrera and the surprising Malaysian rookie Khairul Idham Pawi.
