2016 Chang Thailand World Superbike Superpole Results: Two Laps On The Qualifying Tyre

Superpole one was the customary fifteen minutes with all but the top ten and without the use of qualifying tyres.

Josh Brookes opened Superpole but it was Leon Camier who set the fastest first lap, nine tenths quicker. Karel Abraham knocked another half second off that next lap. As Xavi Fores took second place, everyone pitted in for the traditional mid-session tyre change. Riders don't get to use the sticker qualifying tyres in the first Superpole session, a new regulation for 2016, but that doesn't stop most riders taking two short runs instead of one long.

Karel Abraham increased his pace slightly, with Josh Brookes knocking Fores out of second place and as the flag came out, it looked like both Milwaukee BMWs would qualify, but Matteo Baiocco tied a clean last sector together, in spite of being half a second behind the pace, a quarter behind second going into the last sector, stole second place from Josh Brookes and joined Karel Abraham in the second Superpole.

Jonathan Rea was first out of the pits in the second session, setting the target that was easily beaten by over half a second by Michael van der Mark, who increased the pace for his second lap and was quicker throughout most of his third lap, losing out on the last sector as he joined traffic that was pitting in.

Seven minutes left, all twelve riders sat in the pits for two minutes as they got their qualifying tyres fitted and any last minute adjustments made.

Chaz Davies was the first rider with the Q tyres fitted, but he hit less eager traffic and lost a bit of time meeting up with his teammate on his out lap. He set the fastest time but it was beaten by Tom Sykes and Michael van der Mark. On the last possible lap, Sykes and van der Mark both managed to squeeze a second lap out of the qualifying rubber. Sykes couldn't beat the Dutchman who took his first World Superbike pole position with an even faster last lap. Sykes did match Rea's exact time, but as Rea was the first to set it, he took third place. Alex Lowes suffered a technical problem and didn't get a lap on the qualifying tyre.

The Honda's rumoured power increase looks less and less implausible as the weekend goes on.

UPDATE: Tom Sykes was awarded second place ahead of Jonathan Rea as his second-quickest time was faster than Rea's.
