Jorge Lorenzo has posted a scorching time on the last day of testing at Qatar, the Movistar Yamaha rider lapping faster than the race lap record held by Casey Stoner, and seven tenths off the pole time set by Andrea Dovizioso last year, using the special softer rubber the Ducatis were allowed to use. Lorenzo has been fast throughout testing, and so far, Friday is no different, the reigning world champion figuring at or near the head of the timesheets all day.
Lorenzo leads a veritable fleet of Ducatis, Andrea Iannone at its head, with Hector Barbera, Yonny Hernandez and Andrea Dovizioso taking second through fifth place. Qatar has historically been a good track for the Italian factory, and the switch to Michelins has changed nothing there so far. Marc Marquez is the first honda in sixth place, just a few hundredths quicker than Valentino Rossi on the second Movistar Yamaha, who is in turn just a few thousandths faster than Maverick Viñales on the Suzuki. Viñales had bike trouble earlier, the GSX-RR coming to a halt and having to be pushed back to the pits.
There have been few crashes, as riders start to push for a really quick lap. Valentino Rossi, Hector Barbera and Tito Rabat have all gone down, though all without injury. The same cannot be said for their bikes, which have suffered enough damage for them to require major repair work.
Testing continues until 11pm this evening, though most teams will pack up shortly after 10pm, when the danger of dew forming starts to take hold.
